Kunsten Festival Des Arts
KUNSTEN Museum of Modern Art is located in Aalborg, Denmark, on Kong Christians Allé near its junction with Vesterbro. Of a modern Scandinavian design, it was built between 1968 and 1972 by Finnish architects Elissa and Alvar Aalto and Danish architect Jean-Jacques Baruël. It was completed on 8 June 1972. The museum has been termed a "showplace for 20th-century Danish and international art", as it showcases both domestic and international modern art collections. It is described as "strikingly contemporary in both form and content". History The architectural plans for designing the museum were selected from the 144 submissions made to the Nordic architectural competition by 15 January 1958. Aalborg
Aalborg (, , ) is Denmark's fourth largest town (behind Copenhagen, Aarhus, and Odense) with a population of 119,862 (1 July 2022) in the town proper and an urban population of 143,598 (1 July 2022). Wilhelm Freddie
Wilhelm Freddie, born Christian Frederik Wilhelm Carlsen (7 February 1909 – 26 October 1995) was a Danish painter, sculptor and filmmaker. Initially working along a somewhat abstract line, he soon turned towards a more realistic surrealism, only to later return to abstract art. Some of his works were highly controversial and considered pornographic at their time, resulting in confiscation of the works and his imprisonment though his artistic merits were later recognized. Some of Freddie's works criticized Nazism and fascism, like the 1936 paintings ''Meditation on the Anti-Nazi Love'' and ''Phénomène psychophotographique'', and his 1938 exhibition ''Surreal-Sex''. Kirsten Ortwed
Kirsten Møller Ortwed (born 28 May 1948) is a Danish artist, now based in Cologne, Germany. She is noted for her striking sculptures in public spaces and her sometimes surprising combinations of traditional and unconventional materials. Early life Born in Virum, she began to paint when she was 13 and hoped to study at the Academy but her parents did not agree. In 1965, she travelled around Europe alone. On her return, she became interested in the avant-garde movement in Copenhagen. In 1967, she turned to weaving and textile art, studying first under John Becker (1915–1986), then from 1969 as an apprentice with Naja Salto (born 1945). Kirsten Christensen
Kirsten Annette Christensen (born 1943) is a Danish painter and ceramist. She has created large reliefs depicting existential themes such as old age, sickness, pollution and death. Biography Born in Copenhagen on 7 February 1943, Christensen first studied art at the Arts and Crafts School (1964–69) before attending the masonry and space art department of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (1969–75). After graduating, she became a teaching assistant. In that capacity, she participated in decorating the pedestrian tunnels in Albertslund and Hjørring. Using stoneware as her preferred material, she initially created imaginative compositions but soon began to include human figures and scenes. Willy Ørskov (21 December 1920 in Aarhus – 12 June 1990 in Helsingør) was a Danish sculptor who is remembered for works created from plastics and inflatable materials. Biography Ørskov's studies at the Valand School of Fine Arts in Gothenburg, Sweden (1954–1960) were completed by stays in Paris, Greece and Italy at the end of the 1950s. Robert Jacobsen
Robert Julius Tommy Jacobsen (4 June 1912 – 26 January 1993) was a Danish sculptor and painter. The Danish Robert Award is named in his honor. Biography Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen. He was self-taught as a sculptor. During World War I, he worked with Danish modernist artists such as Asger Jorn, Carl-Henning Pedersen and Egill Jacobsen. They participated in the circle around the journal ''Helhesten'' and would later come to make up the COBRA-movement. Richard Mortensen
Richard Mortensen (23 October 1910 – 6 January 1993) was a Danish painter. Biography Richard Strange Mortensen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He studied between 1931 and 1932 at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen. Influenced by the works of Wassily Kandinsky, he developed an abstract art style. In Copenhagen, Mortensen was joint founder of the "Linien" school of abstract painters. In 1937, he undertook a study trip to Paris, where he met pioneers of surrealism, such as Salvador Dalí, Roger Vitrac, Gala Éluard, Michel Leiris, Antonin Artaud, Raymond Queneau and André Masson. Sonja Ferlov Mancoba
Sonja Ferlov Mancoba (1 November 1911 – 17 December 1984) was a Danish avant-garde sculptor. Biography She attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was affiliated with the CoBrA group, along with her husband, South African artist Ernest Mancoba. Ferlov Mancoba was trained as a painter. She studied under Bizzie Høyer from 1930 to 1932 and at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1933 to 1935. She debuted at the annual Artists' Autumn Salon (Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling) in 1935 with two plaster sculptures, ''Bird with Young'' and ''Two Living Beings''. Carl-Henning Pedersen
Carl-Henning Pedersen (23 September 1913 – 20 February 2007) was a Danish painter and a key member of the COBRA movement. He was known as the "Scandinavian Chagall", and was one of the leading Danish artists of the second half of the 20th century. Biography Pedersen was born in Copenhagen and brought up in the poor area near Vigerslev Alle. He held radical political beliefs. He joined the International Folk High School in Elsinore in 1933, where he met self-taught painter Else Alfelt. They married in 1934, and their first daughter, Vibeke Alfelt, was born later that year. Asger Jorn
Asger Oluf Jorn (3 March 1914 – 1 May 1973) was a Danish painter, sculptor, ceramic artist, and author. He was a founding member of the avant-garde movement COBRA and the Situationist International. He was born in Vejrum, in the northwest corner of Jutland, Denmark, and baptized Asger Oluf Jørgensen. The largest collection of Jorn's works—including his major work ''Stalingrad''—can be seen in the Museum Jorn, Silkeborg, Denmark.
