The Cross of Merit with Swords () is a Polish military award established October 19, 1942, by the Polish Government in Exile. Criteria The Cross of Merit with Swords is awarded for deeds of bravery and valor during time of war not connected with direct combat, and for merit demonstrated in perilous circumstances. The cross may be awarded twice in each grade to the same person (since 1992; earlier it has could be awarded four times). The following is a list of medals, awards and decorations in use in Poland. Most of them are awarded by the Polish Army, but some are civilian decorations that may be worn by the military personnel. Most of these decorations ceased to be awarded; some were awarded before World War II only, and some in the People's Republic of Poland only; order of some of them was changed by law. The state awards may be awarded only by the President of Poland. The order of precedence was last reformed in 2007. Charles Gossage Grey
Captain Charles Gossage Grey (June 20, 1894 – March 6, 1987) was an American World War I flying ace credited with five aerial victories. He remained in France after World War I. During World War II, he joined the Office of Strategic Services and served with the French Resistance. He continued in U. S. civil service until his retirement in 1961. Early life pre World War I Charles Gossage Grey was born in Chicago, Illinois, on 20 June 1894, the son of Charles Scott, and he was later adopted by his stepfather Walter C. Jan Zaleski (Gliwice)
Jan Zaleski (born 8 March 1869 in Kalwaria near Augustów (modern-day Lithuania), in the Russian Empire; died 22 August 1932 in Warsaw, Republic of Poland) was a Polish biochemist who made significant contributions to the understanding of blood chemistry. Career From 1904–1907, Zaleski was a lecturer at the Agrarian University of Dublany, near Lviv. From 1907–1918, Zaleski worked at the Medical Institute for Women in Petrograd, starting out as a laboratory assistant and becoming Professor of General and Organic Chemistry in 1916. From 1922 until his death in 1932, Zaleski was Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Toxicology at Warsaw University. He became a member of the Polish Academy of Learning in 1921. Research Between 1895 and 1901, Zaleski conducted research with Marceli Nencki on the ammonia content of blood and on conversions of blood pigments. Maria Irena Mileska
Maria Irena Mileska (maiden name ''Książek''), pseudonym Jaga (17 November 1908 in Kraków – 19 September 1988 in Kraków) was a Polish educator, lieutenant of the underground Polish Home Army, scoutmaster and doctor of geography. She was a war resister during World War II, took part in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. She was interred in German prisoner-of-war camps and became commander of the women imprisoned with her there. Biography Mileska passed her final exams in May 1927 and graduated from the Queen Wanda State Girls' High School in Kraków. In 1932, she graduated in geography from Jagiellonian University and became a teacher. She joined the Scouts in 1919 and became a commander of the Kraków banner for the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association (Związek Harcerstwa Polskiego ( ZHP)).
