The Krewe of Yuga was the first gay Carnival krewe in New Orleans, founded in 1958 by members of the gay community. Costumed parties to view the Krewe of Carrollton parade in Uptown were transformed into a krewe with a Queen reigning over the festivities, a ball captain, and sometimes a King. Krewe of Carrollton is a New Orleans Mardi Gras krewe. History and formation The Krewe of Carrollton was formed from the Seventh District Carnival Club by Oak Street merchants in 1924 and is the 4th oldest Krewe in New Orleans The riding membership now includes over 450 people. The Krewe of Proteus is a New Orleans Carnival Krewe, founded in 1882, the oldest continuous parading Old Line Krewe. History and formation The Krewe of Proteus is the longest riding Old Line Night Parade Krewe in New Orleans Carnival after the Mistick Krewe and the Knights of Momus, stopped parading in 1992. The parade of the krewe of Proteus traditionally travels an Uptown or St. Charles route ending on Canal Street. Parade floats still use original chassis from the early 1880s. Proteus is an offshoot of Mistick Krewe, and Knights of Momus - formed because the Mistick Krewe's waiting list was too long. The Mistick Krewe of Comus, founded in 1856, is a New Orleans, Louisiana, Carnival Krewe. It is the oldest continuous organization of New Orleans Mardi Gras festivities. Before Comus was organized, Carnival celebrations in New Orleans were mostly confined to the Roman Catholic Creole community, and parades were irregular and often very informally organized. The Krewe of Armeinius is one of the private groups, krewes, that celebrate the annual Mardi Gras festival in New Orleans. History and activity Carnival in New Orleans is an important facet of its history and has become an integral part of the city's love of celebration. Private groups who celebrate Carnival, or Mardi Gras, are called krewes and date back to the mid-19th century, often secretive and exclusive. By the late 1950s, gay groups began to form their own krewes, but because of societal stigma and even laws making homosexuality illegal, these krewes celebrated in the shadows and were hidden for the most part from the overt celebrations of Carnival.
