Kramersmolen, Goutum
Kramersmolen is a hollow post mill in Goutum, Friesland, Netherlands which was built in 2002. The mill is listed as a Rijksmonument, number 24508. (Click on "Technische gegevens" to view.) History The mill was originally built in the 18th century at Wirdum to drain the Wirdumer Nieuwland polder. At Wirdum, it was also known by the name of ''Old Barrahûs''. It has always formed a pair with ''Molen Hoogland''. (Click on "Geschiedenis" to view.) On 1 March 1949, the cap and sails were blown of in a storm. The mill was soon repaired. The mill was restored in 1968-69. On 30 September 1986, the mill was sold to Stichting De Fryske Mole ( en, Frisian Mills Foundation). In 1995, it was moved to Zwette, along with ''Molen Hoogland''. Following the latter mill's destruction by fire in 1999, another site was sought and the mill was moved to Goutum in 2002. The mill was officially re-opened on 24 October 2002. Windpump
A windpump is a type of windmill which is used for pumping water. Windpumps were used to pump water since at least the 9th century in what is now Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. The use of wind pumps became widespread across the Muslim world and later spread to China and Indian subcontinent, India. Windmills were later used extensively in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands and the East Anglia area of Great Britain, from the late Middle Ages onwards, to drain land for agricultural or building purposes. Simon Stevin's work in the ''waterstaet'' involved improvements to the sluices and spillways to control flooding. Windmills were already in use to pump the water out, but in ''Van de Molens'' (''On mills''), he suggested improvements, including the idea that the wheels should move slowly, and a better system for meshing of the gear teeth. Post Mill
The post mill is the earliest type of European windmill. Its defining feature is that the whole body of the mill that houses the machinery is mounted on a single vertical post, around which it can be turned to bring the sails into the wind. All post mills have an arm projecting from them on the side opposite the sails and reaching down to near ground level. With some, as at Saxtead Green, the arm carries a fantail to turn the mill automatically. With the others the arm serves to rotate the mill into the wind by hand. The earliest post mills in England are thought to have been built in the 12th century. The earliest working post mill in England still used today is to be found at Outwood, Surrey. Windmill Sail
Windmills are powered by their sails. Sails are found in different designs, from primitive common sails to the advanced patent sails. The Archimedes screw, also known as the Archimedean screw, hydrodynamic screw, water screw or Egyptian screw, is one of the earliest hydraulic machines. Goutum
Goutum is a village in the municipality Leeuwarden in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 2,945 in January 2017. It is still an independent village, but is surrounded by the city of Leeuwarden on all sides. There are two windmills in Goutum, ''Kramersmolen'' and ''Molen Hoogland''. History The village was first mentioned in 1366 as Goeltum, and means "settlement of Golde (person)". It was sometimes referred to as Dola-Goutum (Goutum on the border) to distinguish between Scharnegoutum. Goutum developed on several ''terps'' (artificial living mounds) in the middle ages. The '' stins'' Wiarda State was located near Goutum, and was first mentioned in the 14th century. It was owned by the son of Sjoerd Wiarda, the '' potestaat'' (comparable to governor) of Friesland. Rijksmonument
A rijksmonument (, ) is a national heritage site of the Netherlands, listed by the agency Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed (RCE) acting for the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. At the end of February 2015, the Netherlands had 61,822 listed national heritage sites, of which approximately 1,500 are listed as archaeological sites. De Hollandsche Molen
Vereniging De Hollandsche Molen () ( en, Dutch Windmill Association) is a Dutch organization founded in 1923 to preserve windmills in the Netherlands, to document them, and to restore them. Financial support comes from members and from grants by organizations such as the (a Dutch lottery). Their website provides access to a database which documents some 1400 mills in the Netherlands; "Het Nederlands Molenbestand" is authoritative on the topic. Wirdum ( fry, Wurdum) is a village in Leeuwarden municipality in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 1,060 in January 2017. History The village was first mentioned in 1335 as Weerdum, and means "settlement on the ''terp''". Wirdum developed on the ''terp'' (artificial living mount) in the Middle Ages. Stichting De Fryske Mole
The Stichting De Fryske Mole ( en, Frisian Mills Foundation) is a foundation for the preservation of windmills in the Dutch province Friesland, owning 42 of the 124 windmills in Friesland and closely co-operating with the Gild Fryske Mounders with which it publishes a quarterly magazine, ''De Utskoat''. The ''Stichting De Fryske Mole'' was founded in December 1970 to preserve those mills that were otherwise difficult to save. Consequently, all of the foundation's mills are drainage mills often standing in remote locations where there are no other parties interested in or able to pay for restoration and maintenance.
