Kosovan Migration To The United Kingdom
Kosovo Albanians in the United Kingdom refers to Kosovo Albanians who have settled or are temporarily living in the United Kingdom. The earliest arrivals from Kosovo settled in London in the 1990s, with pockets of arrivals in other cities. The 2011 Census recorded 28,390 Kosovo-born residents (of all ethnicities) in England and 56 in Wales. The censuses of Scotland and Northern Ireland recorded 215 and 44 Kosovo-born residents respectively. During the Kosovo War, some Kosovans claimed asylum in the UK. During 1998, there were 7,980 applications from Federal Republic of Yugoslavia citizens, of whom most were Kosovo Albanians. A substantial emigration from Kosovo has taken place in various phases during the second half of the 20th century. It is estimated that about a third of people born in Kosovo currently live outside Kosovo. Emigration has taken place in separate waves motivated mainly by economic reasons, but also as a result of the Kosovo War. The Kosovo diaspora is usually included in the wider Albanian diaspora with Albanians from Albania and North Macedonia. Kosovo–United Kingdom relations are foreign relations between the Kosovo, Republic of Kosovo and the United Kingdom, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Dardan Aliu (born 23 July 1993), known professionally as Regard, is a Kosovo-Albanian disc jockey (DJ) and producer. Born and raised in Ferizaj, Aliu made his international breakthrough in 2019 with his Ride It (Jay Sean song)#Regard version, remix of Jay Sean's single "Ride It" (2008), which resulted as a commercial success worldwide. Life and career Regard was born as Dardan Aliu on 23 July 1993 into an Kosovo Albanians, Albanian family in the city of Ferizaj, Kosovo. Geraldo Bajrami (born 24 September 1999) is a professional footballer who plays as a defender for National League club Notts County. He came through the youth system at Birmingham City, and made his EFL Championship debut in 2019. He spent time on loan at Solihull Moors of the National League in 2020, and was released in 2021.
