Korean Cinema
The term "Cinema of Korea" (or "Korean cinema") encompasses the motion picture industries of North and South Korea. As with all aspects of Korean life during the past century, the film industry has often been at the mercy of political events, from the late Joseon dynasty to the Korean War to domestic governmental interference. While both countries have relatively robust film industries today, only South Korean films have achieved wide international acclaim. North Korean films tend to portray their communist or revolutionary themes. South Korean films enjoyed a "Golden age" during the late 1950s, and 1960s, but by the 1970s had become generally considered to be of low quality. Nonetheless, by 2005 South Korea became a nation that watched more domestic than imported films in theatres due somewhat to laws placing limits on the number of foreign films able to be shown per theatre per year, but mostly due to the growth of the Korean entertainment industry which quadrupled in size d ...

Deuljwi
''Deuljwi'' (들쥐, ''Field Mouse'') is a 1927 Korean film written, directed, edited by and starring Na Woon-gyu (1902-1937). It premiered at the Danseongsa Theater in Seoul. Plot The plot concerns a young couple who have made a marriage vow with each other. Their marriage is thwarted when the woman is forced to marry a rich gangster. A fighter for justice called "Deuljwi(Field Mouse)" stops the wedding, kills the gangsters, and returns the bride to her betrothed. Reception The film was considered to be work of art that symbollically represent the invasiveness of Japanese colonialists with the rich gangster being the Japanese and the man who was stolen of his potential wife being the korean nation and was banned by the Japanese authorities on the very next day of release. The film was the first one to be banned and was able to be screened after cuts. ''Punguna'' ( 풍운아, Soldier of Fortune) is a 1926 Korean film. The silent, black-and-white film was written, directed, edited by and starred Na Woon-gyu (1902-1937). It premiered at the Choseon Theater in December 1926. Plot summary In ''Punguna'', Na Woon-gyu plays the role of Nicolai Park, a veteran of the Russian army, who has returned to Korea from European battlefields. Broke, hungry, and unable to find employment, he is taken in as a boarder by Kim Chang-ho. Chang-ho's friend, Cha-duk becomes romantically involved with Hae-ok, who had sold herself to support her parents. Cha-duk's wife, Yeong-ja becomes involved with Nicolai, who rejects her proposal to run away with him. The romantic complications spiral until Yeong-ja kills Cha-duk. The film ends with Nicolai departing for destinations unknown while the other boarders bid him farewell. "Arirang" (; ) is a Korean folk song. There are about 3,600 variations of 60 different versions of the song, all of which include a refrain similar to "''Arirang, arirang, arariyo'' ()". It is estimated the song is more than 600 years old. "Arirang" is included twice on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Na Woon-gyu
Na Woon-gyu (October 27, 1902 – August 9, 1937) was a Korean actor, screenwriter and director. He is widely considered the most important filmmaker in early Korean cinema, and possibly Korea's first true movie star. Since he often wrote, directed and acted in his films, he has even been said to have started the auteur film-making tradition in Korea. Early life Na Woon-gyu was the third son of Na Hyong-gwon, a military officer during the final days of the Joseon Dynasty who had returned to his hometown of Hoeryong, Hamgyong, Hamgyongbuk-do to teach. As a high-school student, Na was involved in theater and acting, but also in anti-Japanese activities including the March 1, 1919 March 1st Movement, protest against the occupation. Im Kwon-taek (born December 8, 1934) is one of South Korea's most renowned film directors. In an active and prolific career, his films have won many domestic and international film festival awards as well as considerable box-office success, and helped bring international attention to the Korean film industry.
