Koos De Bruin
Koos de Bruin (31 December 1941 – 15 March 1992) was a Dutch painter, draftsman, sculptor and graphic artist. Early life Koos de Bruin was born on 31 December 1941 in Gouda, South Holland. At an early age, he showed an aptitude for art and planned to attend secondary school at a drawing academy. After a difficult childhood, at the age of 14 he left home and began working as a road worker and truck driver to provide an income for living expenses, while painting in the evening. De Bruin attended the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague for a year, which he would eventually leave due to conflict with his lecturers. After this period he continued his art practice, learning how to work with different mediums and in varying artistic styles. Career In the early period of his career, de Bruin predominantly worked figuratively with his style becoming gradually more primitive and expressionistic. COBRA (or CoBrA) was a European avant-garde movement active from 1948 to 1951. The name was coined in 1948 by Christian Dotremont from the initials of the members' home countries' capital cities: Copenhagen (Co), Brussels (Br), Amsterdam (A). The Cobra Museum of Modern Art ( nl, Cobra Museum voor Moderne Kunst) is an art museum in Amstelveen in the Netherlands. The collection of the museum consists of key works by artists associated with three art movements, Vrij Beelden (1945), Cobra (1948–1951), and Creatie (1950–1955). In addition, the museum organizes temporary exhibitions by national and international avant-garde artists. History The Cobra Museum of Modern Art opened its doors on November 8th, 1995, as a reference to the founding date of the Cobra movement on the 8th of November, 1948. The Netherlands Institute for Art History or RKD (Dutch: RKD-Nederlands Instituut voor Kunstgeschiedenis), previously Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (RKD), is located in The Hague and is home to the largest art history center in the world. The center specializes in documentation, archives, and books on Western art from the late Middle Ages until modern times.
