Douglas Kolk
Douglas Kolk (1963 – August 2014) was an American artist based in Boston, Massachusetts. He is known primarily for his drawing, as well as work in collage and mixed media. Early life and education Kolk was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1963. Kolk's parents operated a nursing home in Newark. Career Kolk's work has been shown internationally at galleries and museums including the Helsinki City Art Museum in Finland, Kasseler Kunstverein, Museum Frieder Burda and Kunsthalle Mannheim in Germany, Kunsthalle St. Gallen, the Saatchi Gallery and Royal Academy in London. His work features in several prominent collections including The Falckenberg Collection and the Saatchi Gallery. He was represented by Arndt & Partner in Berlin and Zurich. Bergen-Hohne Training Area
Bergen-Hohne Training Area (German: ''NATO-Truppenübungsplatz Bergen'' or ''Schießplatz Bergen-Hohne'') is a NATO military training area in the southern part of the Lüneburg Heath, in the state of Lower Saxony in northern Germany. It covers an area of , which makes it the largest military training area in Germany. It was established by the German armed forces, the ''Wehrmacht'', in 1935. At the end of the Second World War it was taken over by British occupying forces and some of its facilities used as a liberation camp for survivors of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, which was located on the edge of the training area near the town of Bergen. Under British control, the training area was steadily expanded and, since the 1960s, has also been used by the German Armed Forces (''Bundeswehr'') and other NATO troops. A kolk (colc) is an underwater vortex created when rapidly rushing water passes an underwater obstacle in boundary areas of high shear. High-velocity gradients produce a violently rotating column of water, similar to a tornado. Kolks can pluck multiple-ton blocks of rock and transport them in suspension for thousands of metres. Kolks leave clear evidence in the form of plucked-bedrock pits, called rock-cut basins or kolk lakes and downstream deposits of gravel-supported blocks that show percussion but no rounding. Examples Kolks were first identified by the Dutch, who observed kolks hoisting several-ton blocks of riprap from dikes and transporting them away, suspended above the bottom. Hanco Kolk (born 11 March 1957, Den Helder) is a Dutch cartoonist and comics artist. He is best known for his collaborations with Peter de Wit, with who he made '' Gilles de Geus'' and ''S1NGLE' Kolk married author Isabelle Rosselin in 2016. Biography Kolk made his debut in the Dutch underground comics magazine ''Tante Leny presenteert!''. In 1980 he was one of the founders of ''Studio Arnhem'', a collective of comics artists and writers. After working anonymous for the magazine ''Donald Duck'' for several years he went to the magazine '' Eppo'', where he made the humoristic historical adventure comics series '' Gilles de Geus'' together with Peter de Wit from 1983 to 2003. A bog pond (german: Moorauge) is a waterbody in the middle of a raised bog, raised or kettle bog, formerly also in percolating mires (''Durchströmungsmooren''). It is also called a bog pool, bog eye, raised bog kolk, bog kolk or just kolk. Bog ponds owe their existence to the growth of the bog body and are thus of biogenic origin. Brown bog ponds are surrounded by peat and receive their water exclusively from precipitation or from the large rain storage capacity of raised bogs. Such kolks generally represent the non-evaporating excess water of a bog. The central waterbody of these bogs exhibit almost no sedimentation. The accumulation of nutrients can lead to the formation of floating mats. Their vegetation differs from that of other structures in the bog.
