The Kohlmarkt (English: Cabbage Market) is one of the most famous streets in the center of Vienna. It stretches from Michaelerplatz to the Graben, Vienna, Graben and is considered Vienna's luxury shopping street due to a high density of jewelers and branches of international fashion labels. Together with the Graben and the Kärntner Straße, the Kohlmarkt forms Vienna's so-called "Golden U" of inner-city shopping streets, which offer upscale stores and are pedestrian zones. History The history of the Kohlmarkt dates back to the time of the Roman legionary camp Vindobona. Graben, Vienna
The Graben is one of the most famous squares in Vienna's first district, the city center. It begins at Stock-im-Eisen-Platz next to the Palais Equitable, and ends at the junction of Kohlmarkt and Tuchlauben. Another street in the first district is called ''Tiefer Graben'' (deep ditch). It is crossed by Wipplinger Straße by means of the '' Hohe Brücke'', a bridge about above street level. History Origins The Graben traces its origin back to the old Roman encampment of ''Vindobona''. The south-western wall of the settlement extended along the length of the present-day Graben and Naglergasse; before the wall lay a trench (''Graben''). This trench still stood in front of the medieval city walls. At the end of the 12th century, the city was enlarged by the Babenberg Dukes, who also filled in and leveled the trench. Demel
Demel (colloquially ''der Demel'') is a famous pastry shop and chocolaterie established in 1786 in Vienna, Austria. The company bears the title of a Purveyor to the Imperial and Royal Court (''k.u.k. Hofzuckerbäcker'') up to today. Location The building is located in the central Innere Stadt district on Kohlmarkt 14 near Hofburg Palace. The interior was designed by Portois and Fix decorators in a Neo-baroque style. The white-aproned waitresses — the ''Demelinerinnen'' — usually address the customers in a traditional honorific third person style, "''Haben schon gewählt?''" or "''Wollen etwas zu sich nehmen, wenn belieben?''". The cabaret artist Helmut Qualtinger extolled their timeless quality in his song ''Die Demelinerinnen''. Demel temporarily had one additional location in Salzburg, which was closed in March 2012. Looshaus
The Looshaus is a commercial and residential building at 3, between Herrengasse and , in Vienna. Designed by Adolf Loos and completed in 1912, it is considered a major building of Viennese Modernism. Building The modernist design of the Looshaus contrasts with both historicism and the floral ornament of Secessionist architecture. Although functionalist, it is far from purely utilitarian. In particular, it makes use of sumptuous materials. The lower, commercial section of the façade is clad in green Cipollino marble from Euboea, in striking contrast with the simple plaster of the upper, residential section. A colonnade of Tuscan columns was intended to allude to the portico of the St. Michael's Church on the same square.
