Knot A Fish
''Knot a Fish'' is the debut and most critically acclaimed EP by the Irish post-punk band Five Go Down to the Sea?, released in 1983 on the London-Irish label Kabuki records and distributed by Rough Trade. Recorded just after the band changed their name from Nun Attax, it is the only of their recordings to feature cellist Úna Ní Chanainn, and is widely considered their best work. The EP was recorded at Sulán Studios, Ballyvourney, in the autumn of 1982, shortly before the band relocated from Cork City to London. Only Ní Chanainn stayed behind. Reception In 2001, Cathal Coughlan of Microdisney and The Fatima Mansions said that the EP "was just incredible...completely different to Nun Attax mostly; it wasn't like a rock band anymore, it was...bizarre but coherent. Five Go Down To The Sea?
Five Go Down to the Sea? were an Irish post-punk band from Cork, active between 1978 and 1989. Vocalist and lyricist Finbarr Donnelly, guitarist Ricky Dineen and brothers Philip (bass) and Keith "Smelly" O'Connell (drums) formed the band as Nun Attax while teenagers. They became known for Donnelly's absurdist, surreal lyrics and stage presence, Dineen's angular guitar and bass parts and their Captain Beefheart-style rhythm section. The group changed their name to Five Go Down to the Sea? after moving to London in 1983. Their line has at times included guitarists Mick Finnegan, Giordaí Ua Laoghaire, Mick Stack, and the cellist Úna Ní Chanainn. Dineen was influenced by bands such as the Mekons and the Fire Engines and wrote most of the riffs. After achieving a following in Ireland in the early 1980s, they changed their name in 1983 and recorded the ''Knot a Fish'' EP. Microdisney
Microdisney were an Irish rock band formed in Cork in 1980. They were founded and led by songwriters Cathal Coughlan (keyboards, vocals) and Sean O'Hagan (guitar). Originally typeset as Micro Disney, the band had become Microdisney by the time they (Coughlan and O'Hagan) had relocated to London in 1983 and signed to Rough Trade Records. Between 1983 and 1986 the band recorded six Peel Sessions for BBC Radio and released their debut album for Rough Trade called ''Everybody Is Fantastic''. In 1985, their album ''The Clock Comes Down The Stairs'' reached number one in the UK Indie Chart, and they reached the Irish top 40 with the 1987 single "Town to Town". They were one of the few Irish bands of the 1980s to achieve international success with "Town to Town" reaching number 55 in the UK Singles Chart. Ricky Dineen
Ricky Dineen (born 2 April 1962) is an Irish musician best known as the guitarist, and at times bassist with the post-punk band Five Go Down to the Sea?, earlier known as Nun Attax, later as Beethoven–fucking–Beethoven. He wrote most of the band's music and developed their angular guitar style, which he said was in part influenced by The Fire Engines, Gang of Four, The Mekons and Bogshed. Five Go Down To The Sea? were active between 1978 and 1985 and released three EPs; ''Knot a Fish'' (1983), ''The Glee Club'' (1984) and '' Singing in Braille'' (1985). His career highlight came in June 1989 when he formed "Beethoven Fucking Beethoven" with FGDTS vocalist Finbarr Donnelly, and their EP '' Him Goolie Goolie Man, Dem'' was chosen as "Single of the Week" by the ''NME''. Finbarr Donnelly (25 April 1962 – 18 June 1989) was a singer and songwriter from Northern Ireland, who moved to Cork city at a young age. Church Of St Anne, Shandon
The Church of St Anne is a Church of Ireland church located in the Shandon district of Cork city in Ireland. Built between 1722 and 1726, it is situated on a hill overlooking the River Lee. The church tower is a noted landmark and symbol of the city, and the church bells were popularised in a 19th century song. History The name Shandon comes from the Irish, ''Sean Dún'', meaning "old fort". A medieval church dedicated to St. Mary existed close to the site of this fort, and is mentioned in the decretals of Pope Innocent III in 1199 as "St. Mary on the Mountain". This church stood until the Williamite wars when it was destroyed during the siege of Cork (1690). In 1693 this was replaced by a church, also dedicated to St. Mary, and was located at the bottom of Mallow Lane, modern day Shandon Street. The Fatima Mansions were an Irish rock band formed in 1988 by Cork singer/keyboardist Cathal Coughlan, formerly of Microdisney. Cathal Coughlan (16 December 1960 – 18 May 2022) was an Irish singer and songwriter from Cork, best known as the frontman of the band Microdisney, formed with Sean O'Hagan in 1980. Their second album ''The Clock Comes Down the Stairs'' reached number one in the UK Indie Chart. They developed cult followings in the Irish and UK indie music scenes before breaking up in 1988. Coughlan went on to lead the harder-edged The Fatima Mansions, who found critical success with their aggressive live shows and five consistent albums, but broke up in 1995. Cork City
Cork ( , from , meaning 'marsh') is the second largest city in Ireland and third largest city by population on the island of Ireland.
