Knob Creek (Stouts Creek)
Knob Creek is a stream in Iron and St. Francois counties in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is a tributary of Stouts Creek. The stream headwaters arise on the west flank of Oak Mountain at an elevation of 1400 feet. The stream flows west-southwest to enter the adjacent valley near Lopez about one mile south of Middlebrook in the southwest corner of St. Francois County. Stouts Creek
Stouts Creek is a stream in Iron and Madison counties in the U.S. state of Missouri. The stream headwaters lie just northwest of Taum Sauk Mountain and it flows north then east to cross under Missouri Route 21 between Ironton and Arcadia. It continues east passing under Missouri Route 72 and past Lake Killarney. It flows into Madison County to its confluence with the St. Francis River east of Roselle. Pilot Knob is a city in northeast Iron County, Missouri, United States. The population was 671 at the 2020 census. It lies eighteen miles south-east of Belgrade and twenty-seven miles north-east of Centerville. History Pilot Knob was platted in 1858. The city was named after the Pilot Knob mountain nearby, which served as a navigational landmark or "pilot" to hunters and travelers. A post office called Pilot Knob has been in operation since 1858. Ironton is a city in Iron County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,475 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Iron County, and is located 12 miles south of Belgrade. History Ironton was designated county seat in 1857, soon after the formation of Iron County. Like the county, Ironton was named from the deposits of iron ore found in the vicinity. Pilot Knob (Iron County, Missouri)
Pilot Knob is located in the Arcadia Valley of Iron County, Missouri, between the towns of Ironton and Pilot Knob. Pilot Knob, so named because of its distinctive shape and prominent position, reaches an elevation of rising above the Arcadia Valley floor and has a large deposit of iron ore in its upper regions. Pilot Knob is a peak in the St. Francois Mountains. The mountain was heavily mined in the 19th century, leaving many open mine workings. The summit of the mountain consists of the Pilot Knob National Wildlife Refuge which is the home for nearly one-third of the world's population of Indiana bats. The bats hibernate in the abandoned mine workings. Pilot Knob Ore Company donated the land for conservation purposes after ceasing its mining operations on July 22, 1987. Currently the Pilot Knob National Wildlife Refuge is closed to the public to protect habitat for the endangered Indiana bat.
