Bric-à-brac
Bric-à-brac () or bric-a-brac (from French), first used in the Victorian era, around 1840, refers to lesser objets d'art forming collections of curios. The French phrase is now obsolete, dating from the 16th century, then meaning "at random, any old way". Shops selling such items, often referred to as knick knacks today, were often referred to as purveyors of fancy goods, which might also include novelty items and other giftware. The curios in these shops or in home collections might have included items such as elaborately decorated teacups and small vases, compositions of feathers or wax flowers under glass domes, decorated eggshells, porcelain figurines, painted miniatures or photographs in stand-up frames. In middle-class homes, bric-à-brac was used as ornament on mantelpieces, tables, and shelves, or was displayed in curio cabinets; sometimes these cabinets have glass doors to display the items within while protecting them from dust. Today, "bric-à-brac" refers to a ...

Knick Knack
''Knick Knack'' is a 1989 American computer-animated short film produced by Pixar that was written and directed by John Lasseter. The short is about a snow globe snowman who wants to join the other travel souvenirs in a summer-themed party. However, the glass dome that surrounds him prevents him from doing so, thus leading to his many attempts to break out of his snow globe. ''Knick Knack'' is Pixar's fourth short and the final short produced during the company's tenure as a hardware company. The short stands out from Lasseter's other early short films at Pixar in its reliance on pure comedy to drive the story. It was inspired by ''Tom and Jerry'', ''Looney Tunes'', and the work of animators Chuck Jones and Tex Avery. Lasseter and his wife, Nancy, collected snow globes and also enjoyed souvenirs from distant places and those elements made their way into the short as well. Singer Bobby McFerrin improvised the a cappella vocal jazz soundtrack to the film while watching a rough cut w ...

The earliest extant record is a version noted in Anne Gilchrist's ''Journal of the English Folk Dance and Song Society'' (1937), learned from her Welsh nurse in the 1870s under the title "Jack Jintle" with the lyrics: My name is Jack Jintle, the eldest but one, And I can play nick-nack upon my own thumb. With my nick-nack and click-clack and sing a fine song, And all the fine ladies come dancing along. My name is Jack Jintle, the eldest but two, And I can play nick-nack upon my own shoe. With my nick-nack and click-clack and sing a fine song, And all the fine ladies come dancing along. My name is Jack Jintle, the eldest but three, And I can play nick-nack upon my own knee. With my nick-nack and click-clack and sing a fine song, And all the fine ladies come dancing along. Lyrics ...

The name ''knock, knock, ginger'', “knock down ginger” or ''knocky door ginger'', used in parts of Southern England, is attested at least as early as 1967, in an English poem found in the "Childhood in Poetry" collection: :Ginger, Ginger broke a winder :Hit the winda – crack! :The baker came out to give 'im a clout :And landed on his back. Name variations The game in various forms is known by different names geographically, including the following: Europe * Belfast (Northern Ireland) * Knock Down Ginger (England) * Knock Off Ginger (England) * Bobby Knocking (Wales) * Knock a door run (awa ...
