Denison Kitchel (March 1, 1908 – October 10, 2002) was a lawyer from Phoenix, Arizona, who was an influential advisor to and the campaign manager of Republican Barry M. Goldwater in the 1964 U.S. presidential campaign against the Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson. Background Kitchel was born in Bronxville in suburban Westchester County north of New York City, New York. His great-grandfather, Harvey Denison Kitchel, a Congregationalist minister, was from 1866 to 1875 the president of Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont. Kitchel was the son of Connecticut native William Lloyd Kitchel (born 1869) and the former Grace Welch Wheeler (born 1872). His sister, Alice Lloyd Kitchel, was the namesake of his paternal grandmother. The older of his two paternal uncles, Cornelius P. Kitchel, was mayor of Englewood, New Jersey, from 1930 to 1933. Harvey Denison Kitchel (February 3, 1812 – September 11, 1895) was a Congregationalist minister who served as the president of Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont, from 1866 until 1875. Kitchel graduated from Middlebury in 1835 and received his Doctor of Divinity in 1858. In 1865, he was awarded an honorary Master of Arts degree from Yale University. Martha Jane Beattie Kitchel (born August 23, 1945) is an American politician serving as a Democratic member of the Vermont State Senate, representing the Caledonia senate district since January 2005. Early life Kitchel was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, on August 23, 1945. The second of Catherine and Harold Beattie's ten children, she also had four half-siblings. Born to a fifth-generation Vermont farming family, she grew up on her family's dairy farm in Danville, Vermont. In addition to running the farm, Kitchel's parents also were involved in local politics: her mother was a member of the Vermont Farm Bureau and a former state legislator, while her father was a local selectman. Ted Daniel Kitchel (born November 2, 1959) is a retired American basketball player. He was a two-time All-American at Indiana University and represented the United States in the 1982 FIBA World Championship in Colombia. Kitchel played professionally in Italy and was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996. Born in Howard County, Indiana, Kitchel grew up in a rural part of Cass County, Indiana, honing his skills on a makeshift court in a tool shed. As a senior, Kitchel led tiny Lewis Cass High School to a 20-0 regular season record and its first sectional title in 1978. Kitchel averaged 26.2 points and 13 rebounds per game as he was graduated as the school's leading scorer. He committed to play collegiately at Indiana University for the legendary Bobby Knight.
