Kings West was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, Canada. The riding consisted of the towns of Hampton, Rothesay and Quispamsis, and their surroundings. The district was created in 1973, when the multi-member district Kings was subdivided into Kings Centre, Kings East and Kings West. New Brunswick Electoral Redistribution, 1973
The 1973 New Brunswick electoral redistribution was the most radical redistribution of electoral districts in the history of New Brunswick, Canada. Under this redistribution, New Brunswick changed from a mixture of multi-member districts and single-member districts to a scheme of only single-member districts, from bloc voting electoral system to first past the post. As the number of members per district had been re-evaluated as recently as 1967, the number of members was not changed, and multi-member districts were simply subdivided to form single-member districts. Prior to the redistribution, New Brunswick had had the longest and deepest experience of multi-member districts of any province in Canada. George Little (New Brunswick Politician)
George Little (May 22, 1937May 15, 2021) was a Scottish-Canadian teacher and politician. He served as leader of the New Brunswick New Democratic Party (NDP) from 1980 to 1988. Rothesay is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, Canada. The riding consists of the Town of Rothesay and its surroundings. The district was created in 1994 as Saint John-Kings out of parts of Saint John County, Kings County and a small portion of the eastern edge of the City of Saint John all in and around the Town of Rothesay, a bedroom community of Saint John. Kennebecasis (electoral District)
Quispamsis is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, Canada. It was created as Kennebecasis in 1994 and included the town of Quispamsis and surrounding communities along the Kennebecasis River Valley. The district was reduced in size following the 2006 electoral redistribution such that only the Town of Quispamsis were within it so its name was changed to reflect that. Quispamsis means little lake in the woods. The district will remain relatively unchanged following the 2013 electoral redistribution, losing only some of its eastern polls to Hampton. Quispamsis (, sometimes shortened to ) is a Kings County suburb of Saint John, New Brunswick, located to the northeast in the lower Kennebecasis River valley. Its population was 18,768 as of the 2021 census. History The original inhabitants of the area were the Maliseet First Nation, part of the Wabenaki Confederacy. The 1994 New Brunswick electoral redistribution was the first re-alignment of electoral districts in New Brunswick, Canada, since 1973. Under this redistribution, several districts were changed significantly due to considerable population shifts from the northern part of the province to the south. The total number of districts was reduced from 58 to 55. Due to considerable population shifts over the course of two decades, some ridings were merged, while others were split in two, and some were unchanged.
