King Christian X's Freedom Medal
King Christian X's Liberty Medal ( da, Kong Christian den Tiendes frihedsmedaille) was a commemorative decoration awarded by King Christian X for special services to Denmark during World War II. Appearance The medal is circular and made of silver. It is suspended by an integral crown suspension. The obverse bears the effigy in profile of King Christian X, facing right. Inscribed around the edge is ''CHRISTIANUS X REX DANIÆ'' (Christian X King of the Danes). The reverse is inscribed with ''PRO DANIA'' (for Denmark) and dated ''1940-1945'' surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves. Ian Lancaster Fleming (28 May 1908 – 12 August 1964) was a British writer who is best known for his postwar ''James Bond'' series of spy novels. Fleming came from a wealthy family connected to the merchant bank Robert Fleming & Co., and his father was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Henley from 1910 until his death on the Western Front in 1917. General Nils Per Robert Swedlund (16 May 1898 – 28 June 1965) was a Swedish Army officer who was Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces from 1951 to 1961. He was one of the strongest advocates for a Swedish nuclear weapons program. He worked hard to convince the government that they were necessary. Field Marshal Jan Christian Smuts, (24 May 1870 11 September 1950) was a South African statesman, military leader and philosopher. In addition to holding various military and cabinet posts, he served as prime minister of the Union of South Africa from 1919 to 1924 and 1939 to 1948. Smuts was born to Afrikaner parents in the British Cape Colony. He was educated at Victoria College, Stellenbosch before reading law at Christ's College, Cambridge on a scholarship. George Conrad Petersen (19 June 1900 – 25 October 1978) was a New Zealand lawyer, consul, local politician and historian. Early life and family Petersen was born in Mauriceville West, Wairarapa, New Zealand in 1900, son of Danish immigrants Jens Peter and Anna Katrina (nee Nielsen) Petersen. Olav V (; born Prince Alexander of Denmark; 2 July 1903 – 17 January 1991) was the King of Norway from 1957 until his death in 1991. Haakon VII (; born Prince Carl of Denmark; 3 August 187221 September 1957) was the King of Norway from November 1905 until his death in September 1957. Originally a Danish prince, he was born in Copenhagen as the son of the future Frederick VIII of Denmark and Louise of Sweden. Nils-Eric Gustaf Ekblad (12 November 1904 – 25 August 1978) was a Swedish diplomat. Early life Ekblad was born on 12 November 1904 in Lund, Sweden, the son of Erik Ekblad, a headmaster, and his wife Gustava (née Jönsson). When he was fifteen years old in 1920 he passed ''studentexamen'' and enrolled at the Lund University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1922, became a reserve officer in 1924 and earned a Candidate of Law in 1928 before being recruited by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs as an attaché the same year. Baroness Alma Dahlerup née Bech-Brøndom (1874–1969) was a Danish-American philanthropist who supported Danish seamen in World War II through radio broadcasts and speaking assignments. As president of the Danish-American Women's Association, she is remembered in particular for proposing and raising funding for the statue of Hans Christian Andersen in New York's Central Park in memory of the 150th anniversary of his birth. Arne Berge (29 June 1908 – 13 August 1988) was a Norwegian priest. He was seamen's priest in Hamburg during World War II, when he also worked among Scandinavian prisoners in Germany, and helped planning and carrying out the operation of the White Buses (''De Hvide Busser''). Background Berge was born in Stavanger as the son of stereotyper Alfred Berge (1878-1962) and his wife Albertine Johanne Husebø (1879-1956).
