''Kilómetro 111'' is a 1938 Argentine musical film drama directed by Mario Soffici. The film premiered in Buenos Aires. The film is one of several films directed by Soffici which address the social evils of historical Argentina. The film is based on Carlos Olivari's play '' La tercera invasion inglesa'' (1936), which is a fictional semi-documentary of the British railroad monopoly. The film is set in a town in central Argentina and documents the tragedy of the poverty-stricken rural farmers who are forced to sell their harvest to the railroad developers. In an attempt to avoid being exploited, the farmers send their wheat to Buenos Aires, where they unsuccessfully fail to obtain a bank loan. In the end it is down to the generosity of the station master that they are able to use the new line to transport their goods, although his generosity means that he is fired from his job. Mario Soffici
Mario Soffici (14 May 1900 – 10 May 1977) was an Argentine film director, actor and screenwriter of the classic era. Biography A native of Florence, Soffici moved to Argentina in the 1920s and began acting in 1931 and directing in 1935 on the film '' El Alma de Bandoneón'', working with popular actors of the period such as Libertad Lamarque in tango-based musical films. He directed some 40 films between 1935 and 1962, most notably '' Prisioneros de la tierra'' (1939) (often cited as one of the greatest in Argentine cinema), '' El Curandero'' (1955), '' El hombre que debía una muerte'' (1955) and '' Rosaura a las 10'' (1958). He directed and co-wrote with Eduardo Boneo and Francisco Madrid'' La cabalgata del circo,'' where Eva Duarte played a supporting role. He died in Buenos Aires in 1977. Museo del Cine Pablo Ducrós Hicken is a museum of cinema of Argentina located in Buenos Aires. It was established on 1971 and holds a collection of 65,000 reels of film. History The Cinema Museum of the City of Buenos Aires was created on October 1, 1971, from the film collection donated by the widow of researcher and collector Pablo C. Ducrós Hicken.
