Khoren I Paroian
Khoren I Paroyian ( hy, Խորեն Ա. Բարոյան; 24 November 1914, in Nicosia – 9 February 1983, in Antelias) was the Catholicos of the Holy See of Cilicia, from 1963 to 1983. He was born in Adalia, a settlement near the Magaravank in Cyprus with the birth name of Mesrob. He had four brothers and a sister. His parents were originally from Kharpert. He was elected as Catholicos on 12 May 1963 after the death of Zareh I. In 1977, because of his poor health, Catholicos Khoren I decided to have a Coadjutor to ensure that after his death there would be no disruption in the management of the church. Antelias ( ar, أنطلياس) is a city in Lebanon in the Matn District of the Mount Lebanon Governorate. It is located around 5 km to the north of Beirut. Magaravank
Sourp Magar ( hy, Սուրբ Մակար or Magaravank, Մակարավանք) is an Armenian monastery located in a forested valley in the Pentadaktylos range in Cyprus. It is ''de facto'' located in Northern Cyprus. The Magaravank stands at 530 metres and is about 3 km from the Halevga Forest Station. In addition to its historical interest as a centre of Armenian culture, Sourp Magar is noted for its picturesque location and distant views of the Mediterranean and the mountains in Anatolia. The monastery had close ties with the Armenian Catholicosate of Cicilia, located in Antelias, Lebanon. History Magaravank was founded in the early eleventh century and at that time seems to have belonged to the Coptic Orthodox Church. Zareh I Payaslian ( hy, Զարեհ Ա. Փայասլեան) (14 February 1915, Marash – 18 February 1963, Beirut, Lebanon) was Catholicos of Cilicia of the Armenian Apostolic Church from 1956 to 1963. Life Zareh I was born in 1915, in Marash, Ottoman Empire as Simon Payaslian. Escaping the events of the Armenian genocide, his family moved to Syria, residing in the city of Hama, then in Aleppo. He received his primary education in Mesrobian and Haygazian schools in Aleppo. He received his secondary education in the Jesuit Seminary in Aleppo. Later, he became a graduate of the Antelias Seminary of the Armenian Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia. In 1935, he was ordained as a priest and took the name Zareh. Karekin I
Karekin I ( Armenian: ) (August 27, 1932 – June 29, 1999) served as the Catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Church between 1994 and 1999. Previously, he served as the Catholicos of Cilicia from 1983 to 1994 as Karekin II ( Armenian: ). Beginnings Karekin, born and baptized as Neshan Sarkissian, was born in the Armenian-populated village of Kesab in northern Syria, where he attended the Armenian elementary school. In 1946 he was admitted to the Theological Seminary of the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia and in 1949 ordained a deacon.
