Khatt Foundation
The Khatt Foundation () is a non-profit cultural foundation for the advancement of Arabic script, Arabic typography. It was founded in Amsterdam in 2004 by Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès. The organization works to further Arabic typography and design research by creating a platform for a network of designers from different backgrounds and a knowledge center for Arabic typography. The foundation also publishes books on related topics through Khatt Books. Name The word "khatt" () means "line" in Arabic, and it is also used to refer to Arabic calligraphy. Organization The foundation started with the goal of "modernising the image of Arabic design by making it contemporary and innovative, particularly in the field of bilingual typography," referring to typography that works with both Arabic script, Arabic and Latin script, Latin scripts together. HEMA (; originally an acronym for ''Hollandsche Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam'', "Hollandic Standard Prices Company Amsterdam"), is a Dutch variety store-chain. Nasri Khattar
Nasri Khattar (1911–1998) ( ar, نصري خطار was an architect and type designer from Lebanon. He is famous for pioneering an Arabic typeface he called " Unified Arabic," a typeface that condensed the possible forms of Arabic letters, making it more suitable for printing technologies of the time. Khattar was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 for his lifelong work on the Unified Arabic project. Khattar drew inspiration from old letters, which were separated. He gave each letter of the Arabic abjad a single form instead of the four possible forms of an Arabic letter depending on its position within the word: initial, medial, final, and isolated. This helped reduce the number of glyphs necessary to print Arabic to 33. For each letter, he combined elements of the glyph for the individual form with elements of the glyphs for connected forms.
