Kermeter
The Kermeter is an upland region, up to , which is part of the Rureifel within the North Eifel in the districts of Aachen, Düren and Euskirchen in the southwestern part of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. The Kermeter ridge is covered by a forest, some 33 km² in area, that is one of the largest contiguous, deciduous forests in the Rhineland. Since 1 January 2004 it has formed the core zone of the Eifel National Park. Location The Kermeter lies on the territory of the three Eifel parishes of Heimbach, Simmerath and Schleiden. It is bordered to the north and west by the Rur Reservoir (around ) and thus by the Rur valley near Heimbach, to the southwest by the Obersee (a pre-basin of the Rur Dam), and in the south by the Urft Reservoir (at around ) and thus the Urft valley. Urft Reservoir
The Urft Dam (german: Urfttalsperre) is a 58.50 metre high dam in the southwestern part of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. It was built in 1905. The dam impounds the River Urft in the district of Euskirchen to create the Urft Reservoir (''Urftstausee''), 2.16 km² in area. The reservoir is also called the ''Urftsee'' (Lake Urft). The Urft Dam, which was constructed during the period 1900 to 1905, and the Urft Reservoir, which was then the biggest reservoir in Europe, having belonged since 1993 to the Eifel-Rur Water Board (''Wasserverband Eifel-Rur''). Verbrannter Berg (Eifel)
The Verbrannter Berg ("Burnt Mountain") near Wolfgarten in the county of Euskirchen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia is a hill, ,{{GeoQuelle, DE-NW, TIM in the Kermeter, a ridge in the Eifel mountains, in the region of Rur Eifel; at the same time ''Verbrannter Berg'' is the name of a parcel of land. Origin of the name The origin of the name is not clear. One possible explanation is the former presence of numerous charcoal piles on the Kermeter in the past. Location The ''Verbrannter Berg'' rises in the Eifel National Park on the Kermeter ridge above the valleys of the Rur to the north and the Urft to the south. Its summit lies about 260 metres south of the ''Landesstraße 15'' or Kermeter High Road (''Kermeterhochstraße''), which runs from the Rur Dam southeastwards over the ridge to the L 249; the latter then runs to the nearby Schleiden village of Wolfgarten. Eifel National Park
The Eifel National Park (german: Nationalpark Eifel) is the 14th national park in Germany and the first in North Rhine-Westphalia. The park was founded in 2004, and is classified as a "national park in development". Urft (river)
The Urft is a right-hand tributary of the Rur in the county of Euskirchen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It flows through the village of Urft in the municipality of Kall. The Urft rises in the North Eifel region of the Eifel Mountains. Origin of the name The name of the Urft is derived from ''Urd-apa''. The origin of the word ''Urd'' is unknown, but ''apa'' is Celtic and means "stream". In 1075, the Urft was called the ''Urdefa'', in 1419 the ''Orfft'' and, in 1503, the ''Oyrfft''. The village of Urft takes its name from the river. Course The Urft rises in the North Eifel in the High Fens-Eifel Nature Park. Its source is in the Dahlem Forest (''Dahlemer Wald''), west of the Dahlem village of Schmidtheim and (both as the crow flies) northwest of Dahlemer Binz Airfield. Wolfgarten
Wolfgarten is a village in the north of the borough of Schleiden in the Eifel mountains in the county of Euskirchen (district), Euskirchen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The village has a population of about 195. Location Wolfgarten lies in the Kermeter, a hill ridge in the North Eifel within the Eifel National Park. Among the larger streams here are the ''Lorbach'' and ''Großer Böttenbach'', which rise north-northwest and north of the village and flow into the Urft Reservoir to the west, and the ''Eselsbach'', which rises east of the settlement and empties into the eastward-flowing Rotbach (Erft), Rotbach. The'' Wildbretshügel'', at , is the third highest hill in the Kermeter, an upland region which is part of the Northern Eifel. It is located near Gemünd and Hasenfeld in the counties of Euskirchen and Düren in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Gemünd (Schleiden)
Gemünd is a village in the Eifel region of Germany. With about 3,800 inhabitants it is the largest village in the municipality of Schleiden. It is also a well known Kneipp resort. Geography In Gemünd the Olef has its mouth on the River Urft; hence the origin of the name of the village (''Mund'' = ivermouth). On the southern slopes of the Kermeter upland forest and east of the Dreiborn Plateau, the village of Gemünd is the southeastern gateway to the Eifel National Park; the other two gateways to this core zone of the Germano-Belgian nature park are Rurberg in the west and Heimbach in the northeast.
