Keokuk Young Women's Christian Association Building
The Keokuk Young Women's Christian Association Building is a historic building located in Keokuk, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. The local YWCA was organized in 1905 and initially leased space for their activities. The land for this building was donated by Gerard Huiskamp. Completed in 1913, the building was designed by local architect Harry E. Ratcliffe. It is representative of transitional architecture in the early 20th century. with The two-story brick structure is built on top of a full basement. It features Art Deco tile ornamentation. The exposed basement level is concrete that is designed to look like stone. In addition to the YWCA, the building served as a hub for social activities in the community. Keokuk, Iowa
Keokuk is a city in and a county seat of Lee County, Iowa, United States, along with Fort Madison. It is Iowa's southernmost city. The population was 9,900 at the time of the 2020 census. The city is named after the Sauk chief Keokuk, who is thought to be buried in Rand Park. It is in the extreme southeast corner of Iowa, where the Des Moines River meets the Mississippi. Lee County is the southernmost county in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 33,555. The county seats are Fort Madison and Keokuk. Lee County is part of the Fort Madison–Keokuk, IA- IL- MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Fort Madison dates to the War of 1812. The Lee County Courthouse, also known as the South Lee County Courthouse and the U.S. Post Office and Courthouse, is a historic building located in Keokuk, Iowa, United States. History The main building was built from the laying the foundation in April 1887 to its completion on September 30, 1888. The building was designed by Mifflin E. Bell, the Supervising Architect of the US Treasury Department. The corner tower was originally built at five stories, but was extended to seven stories in 1890. James H.
