Kenneth McAlpine (chess Player)
Kenneth McAlpine (born 11 April 1945) is a Scottish chess player, International Correspondence Chess Master (1990), Scottish Chess Championship medalist (1962, 1963). Biography In 1960 in Leicester Kenneth McAlpine shared 2nd place in the British Youth Chess Championship (U15). In 1961 he won Scottish Boys' Chess Championship. Kenneth McAlpine twice played in British Junior Chess Championships (1962, 1963) and shared 2nd place in 1963. Kenneth McAlpine competed in several Scottish Chess Championships. He twice in row finished in 2nd place (1962, 1963). Also Kenneth McAlpine won British Universities' Individual Chess Championship in 1966. In later years, Kenneth McAlpine active participated in correspondence chess tournaments. He won Scottish Correspondence Chess Championships in 1975–76, 1976–77 and 1977–78. International Correspondence Chess Federation (ICCF) was founded on 26 March 1951 as a new appearance of the International Correspondence Chess Association (ICCA), which was founded in 1945, as successor of the Internationaler Fernschachbund (IFSB), founded on 2 December 1928. Scottish Chess Championship
The Scottish Chess Championship is organised by Chess Scotland, formerly the Scottish Chess Association. It has been running since 1884, and nowadays takes the form of a nine-round tournament played over two weekends and the week in between. Auxiliary tournaments, such as grading-limited sections and a senior championship take place over the first seven days and there is a Weekend Congress on the second weekend. Originally, the championship was by invitation only and could only be won by players who would be eligible to compete internationally for Scotland, but sometimes a titled player of another nationality was invited to compete in order to make title norms more likely. In 2008 the Championship was replaced by an international open. The Scottish Champion being determined by the highest finishing Scottish player. Correspondence chess is chess played by various forms of long-distance correspondence, traditionally through the postal system. Today it is usually played through a correspondence chess server, a public internet chess forum, or email. Less common methods that have been employed include fax, homing pigeon and phone. It is in contrast to (OTB) chess, where the players sit at a chessboard at the same time, or play each other in real time via the internet. Correspondence chess allows people or clubs who are geographically distant to play one another without meeting in person. The Chess Olympiad is a biennial chess tournament in which teams representing nations of the world compete. FIDE organises the tournament and selects the host nation. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, FIDE held an Online Chess Olympiad in 2020 and 2021, with a rapid time control that affected players' online ratings.
