Kelly Gallagher (alpine Skier)
Kelly Gallagher MBE (born 18 May 1985), is a retired British skier and the first athlete from Northern Ireland to compete in the Winter Paralympics. Gallagher won Britain's first ever Winter Paralympic gold medal during Sochi 2014. Childhood Kelly was born on 18 May 1985 and was raised in Bangor in the north of County Down. Her father, Patrick Gallagher, was an airline pilot. She is a graduate in mathematics from the University of Bath. Pre-Paralympics Kelly has oculocutaneous albinism, is visually impaired and competes with a sighted guide. At the 2009 New Zealand Winter Games Gallagher, competing with guide Claire Robb, won gold in her first ever international race, the giant slalom. She was selected for the British team at the 2010 Winter Paralympics in February 2010. 2009 New Zealand Winter Games
The 2009 New Zealand Winter Games was a multi-sport event that was held in the Otago region of New Zealand. It was the inaugural New Zealand Winter Games and was organised by the Winter Games New Zealand Trust. Approximately 816 athletes from 41 nations participated in 51 event in seven disciplines. Canada won the Team Trophy through points accumulated through the medals won during the games. The United States finished second and Japan third. The hosts, New Zealand finished in sixth place. Venues The venues for the 2009 New Zealand Winter Games were held around four locations in the Otago region – Queenstown, Wānaka and Naseby. Ski Club Of Great Britain
The Ski Club of Great Britain is a recreational snow sports club, which operates on a not-for-profit basis. It was founded on 6 May 1903 during a meeting at the Café Royal in London. Until the 1960s, the Ski Club of Great Britain was responsible for British alpine ski racing teams. In April 2020, the Ski Club had about 23,000 members, making it the biggest membership-based snow sports club in the UK. Their offices are located in Wimbledon, southwest London. Super-G
Super giant slalom, or super-G, is a racing discipline of alpine skiing. Along with the faster downhill, it is regarded as a "speed" event, in contrast to the technical events giant slalom and slalom. It debuted as an official World Cup event during the 1983 season and was added to the official schedule of the World Championships in 1987 and the Winter Olympics in 1988. Much like downhill, a super-G course consists of widely set gates that racers must pass through. The course is set so that skiers must turn more than in downhill, though the speeds are still much higher than in giant slalom (hence the name). Each athlete only has one run to clock the best time. In the Olympics, super-G courses are usually set on the same slopes as the downhill, but with a lower starting point. Medway is a unitary authority district and conurbation in Kent, South East England. It had a population of 278,016 in 2019.
