''Kate Hopkins, Angel of Mercy'' is an American old-time radio soap opera. After beginning as a transcribed program on seven stations on October 23, 1939, it was broadcast weekday afternoons on CBS from October 7, 1940, until April 3, 1942 and sponsored by Maxwell House coffee. The show's initial premise was that after Kate Hopkins' husband died in a fire, she became a visiting nurse to support herself and her young son in the mythical American town of Forest Falls. Hopkins faced concerns such as "Once started, malicious gossip is hard to stop. Is it wise to face slander openly, or to solve it by running away?" By July 1941, however, Hopkins had become "a widow of forty at a loose end when her son Tom is drafted into the Army." Hopkins was living on a plantation near New Orleans as companion to Jessie Atwood, "a retired and renowned lady of the theater". Nelson Case
Nelson Case (February 3, 1910 – March 23, 1976) was an American radio and television announcer. Case was the son of Walter and Ethel Case. His father was a newspaperman, and his mother was a driving force in the Long Beach Community Players. He attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School and first worked as an announcer on the school's radio station. One of his early ventures into entertainment came when "as a youngster in Long Beach, he sang and played the uke for a band called the Sunset Symphonic Six." He was a graduate of the College of William & Mary, in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he met his future wife. Although Case was best known for being an announcer on popular radio and television programs (in 1953, he was "on radio 20 times a week, on TV three" ), a 1941 newspaper article noted that he "covered everything from news and special events to sports." Constance Collier (born Laura Constance Hardie; 22 January 1878 – 25 April 1955) was an English stage and film actress and acting coach. Templeton Fox (born Esther Fox; July 24, 1913 – January 9, 1993) was an American actress best known for her work in old-time radio. Early years Born in Pasadena, California, Fox is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence B. Fox. She went to school in Elgin, Illinois, and attended Pomona College. She won a talent contest sponsored by a hotel in Los Angeles and gained early acting experience at the Pasadena Community Playhouse.
