Kate Gallego
Katharine Sarah Gallego (née Widland, born October 21, 1981) is an American politician serving as the List of mayors of Phoenix, 62nd mayor of Phoenix, Arizona since 2019. A member of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party, she previously served on the Phoenix City Council from 2014 to 2018. Early life and education Gallego grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her parents are attorneys who moved to Albuquerque from Chicago after the 1979 Chicago blizzard. She grew up with asthma, which made air quality important to her. Gallego graduated from Albuquerque Academy, where she served as student body vice president. She earned a bachelor's degree in environmental studies from Harvard College and a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In common usage, climate change describes global warming—the ongoing increase in global average temperature—and its effects on Earth's climate system. Climate change in a broader sense also includes previous long-term changes to Earth's climate. The current rise in global average temperature is more rapid than previous changes, and is primarily caused by humans burning fossil fuels. An urban heat island (UHI) is an urban or metropolitan area that is significantly warmer than its surrounding rural areas due to human activities. The temperature difference is usually larger at night than during the day, and is most apparent when winds are weak. UHI is most noticeable during the summer and winter. The main cause of the UHI effect is from the modification of land surfaces. A study has shown that heat islands can be affected by proximity to different types of land cover, so that proximity to barren land causes urban land to become hotter and proximity to vegetation makes it cooler. Waste heat generated by energy usage is a secondary contributor. As a population center grows, it tends to expand its area and increase its average temperature. 2018–19 Phoenix Mayoral Special Election
The 2018–19 Phoenix mayoral special election was held on November 6, 2018, to elect the new Mayor of Phoenix, Arizona. The election was officially nonpartisan; candidates ran on the same ballot. In the initial round of the election, since no candidate reached 50 percent plus one vote (as required by Phoenix City Charter), a runoff election was held on March 12, 2019, between the top two finishers. In October 2017, then incumbent mayor Greg Stanton announced that he was running for the United States Congress in , which includes much of Phoenix. Stanton resigned effective May 29, 2018, triggering a special election. The top two candidates from that election, Kate Gallego and Daniel Valenzuela, both fell short of the required 50 percent of the vote, therefore the mayoral race was decided by a final runoff election, which Gallego won.
