Karoo
The Karoo ( ; from the Afrikaans borrowing of the South Khoekhoe !Orakobab or Khoemana word ''ǃ’Aukarob'' "Hardveld") is a semi-desert natural region of South Africa. No exact definition of what constitutes the Karoo is available, so its extent is also not precisely defined. Karoo (novel)
''Karoo'' is a novel by Steve Tesich, published by Chatto & Windus (a division of Random House) in 1998. Oscar-winning writer Tesich died shortly after finishing this novel in 1996 at the age of 53. Karoo was Tesich’s final work and was released posthumously in 1998. The novel is the story of a New York based movie script doctor, Saul 'Doc' Karoo, whose job is to fix film scripts, often at the cost of the writer's originality and dignity, to ensure a movie does well at the box office. We follow Karoo through his privileged lifestyle as he tries to deal with alcoholism, fatherhood, divorce, sex and show business. Plot summary It’s the last Christmas party of 1980 in New York City, Saul Karoo, a script doctor - and the narrator - spends the Christmas party finding a way to avoid taking his adopted teenage son, Billy, home with him. Karoo Scrub Robin
The Karoo scrub robin (''Cercotrichas coryphaeus'') or Karoo robin is a species of bird in the family Muscicapidae. It is found in Lesotho, Namibia, and South Africa. Its natural habitats are dry shrubland and Mediterranean-type shrubby vegetation. Description It is 17 cm long and weighs 19 g. The upperparts are drab greyish brown; the face with a narrow, white supercilium above thin black eye-stripe. Partial whitish eye-ring below eye. Closed tail darker than rump and mantle. Upper wing coverts and flight feathers brown, underwing dull buffy brown. Bill black, eyes brown and legs as well as feet black. Song calls vary between individuals, e.g. ''chip, swee-chipswirraree, seeep-seeep-treeeeyer'', repeated 5 – 10 times. Karoo Prinia
The Karoo prinia or spotted prinia (''Prinia maculosa'') is a small passerine bird. It is a resident breeder in South Africa, Lesotho and far southern Namibia. It is a species found in karoo scrub, fynbos and bracken-covered slopes in semi-desert and mountains. The former eastern subspecies ''P. m. hypoxantha'' is now usually considered to be a separate species, the Drakensberg prinia, ''P. hypoxantha''. Taxonomy The Karoo prinia was described by the French polymath Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon in 1779 in his ''Histoire Naturelle, Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux''. The bird was also illustrated in a hand-coloured plate engraved by François-Nicolas Martinet in the ''Planches Enluminées D'Histoire Naturelle'', which was produced under the supervision of Edme-Louis Daubenton to accompany Buffon's text. Karoo Korhaan
The karoo korhaan (''Eupodotis vigorsii''), also known as karoo bustard, is a species of bird in the bustard family, Otididae, from Southern Africa. The species is sometimes placed in the genus '' Heterotetrax''. It is the sister-species to Rüppell's korhaan, and the two species are sometimes considered conspecific (the same species). Karoo Hoogland Local Municipality
Karoo Hoogland is an administrative area in the Namakwa District of Northern Cape in South Africa. Hoogland an Afrikaans word meaning "highland" and Karoo is a Khoi word meaning "hard" or "dry". The name reflects the area which has dry, arid and desert-like conditions. The municipality incorporates the towns of Williston, Fraserburg and Sutherland. Although the towns are separated by more than 100 km by road, they share many administrative tasks. Karoo Hoogland elected the first (and so far only) mayor from COPE, Jan Julies, in 2011, as a COPE- DA coalition took control of the council after the election of 18 May 2011. The Karoo and Ferrar Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) are two large igneous provinces in Southern Africa and Antarctica respectively, collectively known as the Karoo-Ferrar, Gondwana,E.g. or Southeast African LIP, associated with the initial break-up of the Gondwana supercontinent at . Its flood basalt mostly covers South Africa and Antarctica but portions extend further into southern Africa and into South America, India, Australia and New Zealand.
