Cinema Of Karnataka
Kannada cinema, also known as Sandalwood, or Chandanavana, is the segment of Indian cinema dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Kannada language widely spoken in the state of Karnataka. The 1934 film ''Sati Sulochana'' directed by Y. V. Rao was the first talkie film in the Kannada language. It was also the first film starring Subbaiah Naidu and Tripuramba, and was the first motion picture screened in the erstwhile Mysore Kingdom. The film was produced by Chamanlal Doongaji, who in 1932 founded ''South India Movietone'' in Bangalore. Major literary works have been adapted to the Kannada screen such as B. V. Hrudaya Sangama
''Hrudaya Sangama'' is a 1972 Indian Kannada language drama film directed by Rashi Brothers and produced by MJM Productions. It starred Rajkumar and Bharathi. The film was part black-and-white and part color, thus making it a partial color film. Vijaya Bhaskar scored the music and the story was written by H. N. Muddukrishna.The movie saw a theatrical run of 18 weeks. The film, upon release, was critically acclaimed and went on to win the Karnataka State Award for fourth best film for the year 1972–73. Rajkumar plays a dual role in the movie. However, this movie is not considered as a movie with double role since the second character appears only for three minutes on-screen in spite of it being an important plot twist. Karnataka State Film Awards are the most notable and prestigious film awards given for Kannada film industry in Karnataka, India. These are considered the highest awards for Kannada language films. They are given annually by the Government of Karnataka to honor the best talent and to provide encouragement and incentive to the Kannada film industry. The awards are decided by a committee, headed by a panel of judges. The jury usually consists of eminent personalities from the film field. The awards intend to promote films with artistic values and to encourage artists, technicians and producers. ''Katha Sangama'' () is a 1976 Indian Kannada-language anthology film, directed by Puttanna Kanagal, based on three short stories; ''Hangu'' by Giraddi Govindaraj, ''Athithi'' by Veena and ''Munithaayi'' by Eshwara Chandra. The film stars Kalyan Kumar, Rajinikanth, B. Saroja Devi and Aarathi in the lead roles. The supporting cast includes Lokanath, Vamana Rao, Shivaramaiah and Master Umesh. The film won three awards at the 1975–76 Karnataka State Film Awards, including the award for Best Actress (Aarathi). The 1984 Tamil film '' Kai Kodukkum Kai'' was an extended version of the '' Munithayi'' segment from this movie. Rajnikanth, who played the antagonist role in the Kannada movie, played the lead role in the Tamil version. Shubraveshti Ramaswamiah Seetharama Sharma (1 December 1933 – 5 June 1985), known popularly as S. R. Puttanna Kanagal, was an Indian filmmaker known for his work in Kannada cinema. He is often considered one of Kannada cinema's most influential filmmakers. Background and personal life Puttanna Kanagal was born to Ramaswamaiah and Subbamma in Kanagal, Mysore, Kanagal, a village in the erstwhile Kingdom of Mysore into a poor family. As he hailed from a poor brahmin family, he had to endure hardships and struggled to get a decent job. He worked as a teacher, salesman and even as a cleaner. His job as a publicity boy brought him closer to theatre and subsequently to cinema. His association with films began when he started working for B. R. Panthulu as an assistant director and also as his driver. His first film as an assistant director was ''Rathnagiri Rahasya'' (1957).
