Karl Schröder I
Karl Schröder (17 March 1816 Oberbosa, Thuringia – 21 April 1890 Berlin) was a German violinist and viola player. He became first a town musician at Quedlinburg and then music director at Neuhaldensleben. He played the viola until 1866 in the family string quartet which also included his two sons Franz Hermann Schröder and Karl Schröder II. Karl Schröder II
Karl Schröder II, also given as Carl Schroeder, (18 December 1848, Quedlinburg – 22 September 1935, Bremen) was a German cellist, composer and conductor, and son of violinist Karl Schröder. He studied as a child with his father and with Karl Drechsler in Dessau. He had three brothers, Carl Hermann Schroeder (1843-1909), who became a composer and violin professor in Berlin, Franz Schröder (before 1855-?) would work as a conductor in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the youngest brother, Alwin Schroeder (1855-1928) was a German-American cellist best known as leading cellist in the Boston Symphony. In his early youth Karl studied with Friedrich Kiel and was appointed to the Sondershausen Hofkapelle at the age of 14. He toured Europe with his family's acclaimed string quartet traveling throughout Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, and even as far as St. Petersburg. Karl Ludwig Schröder (1877-1940) was a screenwriter, director, and agent known for engaging noted authors as scenarists. Stage career Schröder was Dramaturg and director in 1904 of the United Municipal Theaters in Cologne, in 1905 at the Volksoper Wien, 1906 at the Municipal Theatre Glogau, 1908-1909 Deputy Director, director and dramaturg at the Deutsches Theater in Hannover, 1910-1912 executive director of the Koblenz City Theater. Schröder was a journalist, editor of Dramaturgische Blatter in 1905 and co-editor of the German theater magazine (1908–11), secretary 1911/12 and treasurer of the Association of Rhenish-Westphalian Theater Directors. Film career The film medium had in its early years a somewhat tarnished reputation. It was regarded as reckless, vulgar, and titillating.
