Kapit Airport
Kapit Airport is an airport serving Kapit, a town in the state of Sarawak in Malaysia. It used to be operated by Malaysia Airlines, using the Twin Otter aircraft. However it was discontinued due to low demands, and the airport was abandoned. Unscheduled helicopter services continued to land at Kapit Airport. However in 2018, MASwings had announced plans to reinstate services to Kapit, but only when the infrastructure at the current airport site is restored. The announcement is received with mixed response, with comments from Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister, James Jemut Masing citing it as 'outdated idea', and calling for the proposal of building a new airport at Sungai Tunuh area, which can cater ATR aircraft. Kapit
Kapit is a town and the capital of Kapit District in Kapit Division, Sarawak, Malaysia on the south bank of the Rajang River. The district comprises 15,595.6 square kilometres and as of 2020 has a population of 65,800. Kapit is accessible by boat (slightly more than 2 hours from Sibu by express boat), light aircraft, and most recently by road. Reaching Kapit by car and bus from Sibu takes about 1 hour 30 minutes or about 1 hour from Song. It is the vibrant commercial and social center for the middle Rajang River catering to the longhouse communities and timber camps. It is an excellent base for exploring nearby longhouses or for arranging trips to the Upper Rejang and Balleh Rivers. MASwings Sdn Bhd (doing business as MASwings) is a regional airline operating the Rural Air Services (RAS) in East Malaysia. It took over the routes operated by FlyAsianXpress (2006-2007) and the RAS flights by Malaysia Airlines (1965-2006), both being the successors of Borneo Airways (1953-1965). The first flight was on 1 October 2007, which is also the anniversary of the founding of Malaysia Airlines in 1972.
