Kapelle (Schouwen-Duiveland)
Kapelle (formerly Capelle) is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland, about 2 km west of Nieuwerkerk. Until 1813, the hamlet was part of the separate municipality of Capelle en Botland. In 1953, Capelle had grown into a small village, with about 20 houses and a population of around 100, when it was almost completely destroyed in the North Sea flood of 1953. All houses except two were swept away, and 42 inhabitants died. The village was not rebuilt; nowadays only a small hamlet remains, consisting of a number of farms. Capelle Plaatsnaambord
Capelle (also ''Kapelle'') is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located about 6 km west of Waalwijk. The village was first mentioned in 1257 as Capella, and means chapel. The original village was flooded in the St. Elizabeth's flood of 1421. The Dutch Reformed church dates from 1750 and has a wooden domed tower. Capelle was home to 144 people in 1840. Capelle was a separate municipality until 1923, when it merged with Sprang and Vrijhoeve-Capelle. They formed the new municipality of Sprang-Capelle, which existed until 1997. Schouwen-Duiveland
Schouwen-Duiveland () is a municipality and an island in the southwestern Netherlands province of Zeeland. The municipality has 33,737 inhabitants (1 January 2016) and covers an area of (of which is water). The northside of the island has two fixed connections to Goeree-Overflakkee, the Brouwersdam and the Grevelingen. The southside has two fixed connections to cross the Oosterschelde to North Beveland, the Stormvloed Kering or Oosterscheldedam, part of the Delta Works and the Zeeland Bridge. The island is mostly flat and is, besides a small area, below the sea level. On the western tip is a dune whose highest point is about 42 meters above sea level. The island is, in the summer, very popular with (German) tourists. The Renesse area is a popular holiday destination for young people. Nieuwerkerk
Nieuwerkerk is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 23 km south of Hellevoetsluis. Nieuwerkerk was a separate municipality until 1961, when the new municipality of Duiveland was created. History Nieuwerkerk was created in the 12th century. It was a split-off from Ouwerkerk. The fifteenth-century Protestant church, originally dedicated to John (evangelist), has an 6 sided tower. It was rebuilt in 1975 on the foundations of the original tower, which was blown up in 1945 by the Germans. During the North Sea flood of 1953, approximately 265 of the 1,800 residents drowned or went missing. North Sea Flood Of 1953
The 1953 North Sea flood was a major flood caused by a heavy storm surge that struck the Netherlands, north-west Belgium, England and Scotland. Most sea defences facing the surge were overwhelmed, causing extensive flooding. The storm and flooding occurred at the end of Saturday, 31 January 1953 and morning of the next day. A combination of a high spring tide and a severe European windstorm over the North Sea caused a storm tide. The combination of wind, high tide, and low pressure caused the sea to flood land up to above mean sea level. Flooding summary In the Netherlands 20% of the land was below mean sea level (subsequently with the expansion of Flevoland this proportion has increased); the next-highest 30% sat at less than above sea level. Looperskapelle
Looperskapelle is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Zeeland. Zuid-Beveland (; "South Beveland") is part of the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands north of the Western Scheldt and south of the Eastern Scheldt.
