Kannada Cinema
Kannada cinema, also known as Sandalwood, or Chandanavana, is the segment of Indian cinema dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Kannada language widely spoken in the state of Karnataka. The 1934 film ''Sati Sulochana'' directed by Y. V. Rao was the first talkie film in the Kannada language. It was also the first film starring Subbaiah Naidu and Tripuramba, and was the first motion picture screened in the erstwhile Mysore Kingdom. The film was produced by Chamanlal Doongaji, who in 1932 founded ''South India Movietone'' in Bangalore. Major literary works have been adapted to the Kannada screen such as B. V. Rajan–Nagendra
Rajan–Nagendra were an Indian musical duo who were prominent composers of film music in Kannada and Telugu cinema from the late 1950s to the early 1990s. Rajan, along with his brother Nagendra, created a niche for themselves for nearly four decades. The duo scored music for about 375 films, over 200 of them in Kannada and the remainder in other languages like Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Tulu, Hindi and Sinhala. They composed innumerable hits, hundreds of melodious tunes in their career spanning four decades. They also hold the record for the longest active musical pair in the industry. Childhood Rajan (1933–2020) and Nagendrappa (1935–2000) were born in Shivarampet of Mysore in a middle-class musical family. Their father Rajappa was a harmonium and flute player who played background music for silent movies. Viswanathan–Ramamoorthy
Viswanathan–Ramamoorthy were an Indian music composing duo composed of M. S. Viswanathan and T. K. Ramamoorthy. They worked together on over 100 films, from 1952's '' Panam'' to 1965's '' Aayirathil Oruvan''. After their split, Ramamoorthy worked on 16 films between 1966 and 1986. He and Viswanathan reunited in 1995 for ''Engirundho Vandhan''. Early lives Ramamoorthy Ramamoorthy, born into a well-known musical family in Trichy, was a capable violinist at an early age. His father (Krishnasamy Pillai) and grandfather, Malaikottai Govindasamy Pillai, were noted violinists in Trichy. As a child, Ramamoorthy performed several times with his father. During the early 1940s he worked for Saraswathi Stores (in which AVM Productions owner Avichi Meiyappa Chettiar was a partner), and played violin for AVM composer R. Sudharsanam in several films. Kalyan Kumar
Kalyan Kumar (7 June 1928 – 1 August 1999) was an Indian actor, and an occasional film director and producer who worked primarily in Kannada cinema, Kannada and Tamil cinema. Making his acting debut in the mythological drama ''Natashekara'' (1954), Kalyan Kumar went on to star in over 200 films in a span of over five decades. He was among the much sought after actors in the 1950s through 1970s for lead roles. Kalyan Kumar has the credit of being the first ever Kannada actor to star in a colour film in ''Amarashilpi Jakanachari'' (1963). Alongside Kumar, the 1960s and 1970s in Kannada cinema was dominated by two other actors, Dr. Rajkumar, Rajkumar and Udaya Kumar (actor), Udayakumar. ''Vijayanagarada Veeraputhra'' is a 1961 Indian Kannada-language film, directed and produced by R. Nagendra Rao. The film stars R. N. Sudarshan, B. Saroja Devi, R. Nagendra Rao and Kalyan Kumar in the lead roles. The film's musical score was composed by M. S. Viswanathan and T. K. Ramamurthy. ''Sri Shaila Mahathme'' is a 1961 Indian Kannada-language film, directed by Aroor Pattabhi and produced by Neerlahalli Thalikerappa. The film stars Rajkumar, Dikki Madhavarao, Balakrishna and Hanumanthachar. The film has musical score by T. A. Kalyanam. The movie was dubbed and released in Telugu as ''Srisaila Mahatyam''. It marked Jayalalithaa's Indian film debut, having previously worked in an English film Epistle (1961). Her moonlight performance for one of the song sequence became a sensation of today's times. Bommasandra Srinivasaiah Suryanarayana Murthy (16 March 1933 – 26 December 1985), known by his screen name Udaykumar, was an Indian actor and producer in Kannada cinema. He, along with Kalyan Kumar and Rajkumar, were called the ''Kumarathrayaru'' (meaning the three Kumars) of Kannada cinema He has authored many dramas and books. He has performed a broad range of roles and worked with all of the prominent actors of his day.
