Kang Chun-hyok
Kang Chun-hyok (강춘혁) is a North Korean defector, artist, and rapper. Kang defected during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Life in North Korea Kang was born in Onseong. Kang's father left North Korea for China in 1997 but was caught and imprisoned. Kang was a kotjebi (homeless child). When he was 9 or 10 years old he witnessed a public execution. He ran away from home at age 13. Once Kang's father was released from prison, the family crossed the Tumen river to China in 1998. In 2001, the family were caught by the Chinese police. Kang bribed the Chinese officials, and travelled to South Korea via Vietnam and Cambodia. His family reunited with him in South Korea later that year. North Korean Defectors
Since the division of Korea after the end of World War II, North Koreans have fled from the country in spite of legal punishment for political, ideological, religious, economic, moral, personal, or nutritional reasons. Such North Koreans are referred to as North Korean defectors by the North Korean regime. Alternative terms in South Korea, where the defectors often end up, include "northern refugees" ( ko, 탈북자, ''talbukja'' or , ''talbukmin'') and "new settlers" (, ''saeteomin''). During the North Korean famine of the 1990s, there was an increase in defections, reaching a peak in 1998 and 1999. Sun Mu
Sun Mu is a Korean painter. He worked as a propaganda artist in North Korea before fleeing to South Korea in the 1990s. Personal history Sun Mu was born in North Korea and trained by the North Korean Army as a propaganda artist. Later he studied art in college. During a severe famine in the 1990s he fled to South Korea where he works as a painter. Out of concern for the family he left behind in North Korea he uses the pseudonym "Sun Mu" instead of his real name and does not allow photos of his face. The third season of Show Me the Money (SMTM3), which aired in 2014, saw a huge change in production as prominent figures of the Korean hip-hop scene participated in the show. Over 3,000 people auditioned this season, 1.5 times the amount last season, including underground rappers, non-Koreans, students, and previous SMTM contestants. The winner receives one hundred million won prize money, a record deal, and an opportunity to hold a special performance.
