The Kamloops Crown of Curling (formerly the Hub International Crown of Curling, Valley First Crown of Curling, Strauss Crown of Curling, Labatt's Crown of Curling, Labatt Crown of Curling, Thompson Crown of Curling, Thompson Hotel Crown of Curling, and Barton Insurance Crown of Curling) is an annual bonspiel, or curling tournament, held in October at the Kamloops Curling Club in Kamloops. Kamloops ( ) is a city in south-central British Columbia, Canada, at the confluence of the South flowing North Thompson River and the West flowing Thompson River, east of Kamloops Lake. Michael N. Chernoff (born c. 1936) is a Canadian curler and geologist from West Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a and a . Personal life Chernoff has a degree in geological engineering from Queen's University at Kingston. He was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan. He is married to Dorine. After graduating from Queens, Chernoff worked as a geologist, conducting field studies across Canada for several oil and gas companies including California Standard, Pinnacle Petroleum, and Ulster Petroleum. Kurt Balderston (born c. 1963) is a Canadian curler from Sexsmith, Alberta. Career Balderston is a former Canadian Mixed champion, having won the 1992 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship. Since then he has played in four national mixed championships, in 1998, 2001, 2012 and 2013. He finished as the runner-up in 2012 and in sixth place in 2013, when Cheryl Bernard replaced his regular third Desirée Owen. Balderston won a sixth provincial mixed title in 2018 and will represent Alberta at the 2019 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship. Balderston has also competed in the Alberta curling provincials multiple times. His best finishes were as the runner-up in 1991, 1992, 2002, and 2004. Paul Gowsell is a Canadian curler from Calgary, Alberta. Gowsell hit the men's competitive curling world by storm in the late 1970s with his unorthodox antics. Playing career Gowsell was the first skip to win two World Junior Curling Championships. He won his first World Junior championship in 1976, defeating Sweden's Jan Ullsten. He repeated in 1978 by defeating Sweden again, this time skipped by Thomas Håkansson. Gowsell was the third skip to win two Canadian Junior Men's Championships which he did in 1975 and 1978. After juniors, Gowsell was very successful on the cash 'spiel circuit, but played in just one Brier. When he was in his early 20s, Gowsell took his Alberta championship team to an 8-3 record at the 1980 Labatt Brier, and lost to Al Hackner's Northern Ontario team in the semi-final.
