David Kalisch
David Kalisch (also known under the pseudonym: D. J. Schalk; February 23, 1820 – August 21, 1872) was a German playwright and humorist. Early life His infancy and early childhood were spent in a home of comfort and culture; but when he was only seven years old his father died, leaving the family without any means of support, and Kalisch was compelled to add to the family resources by entering the employment of a dealer in small wares, who later on entrusted him with the management of a branch establishment in Racibórz, Ratibor. In 1843 he returned to Breslau, and in October, 1844, went to Paris, where he gradually became on terms of intimacy with a group of poets and socialists that included Heinrich Heine, Georg Herwegh, Karl Grün, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, Karl Marx, and Albert Wolff (journalist), Albert Wolff. David Wayne Kalisch (born 9 August 1960) is an Australian economist and public servant. From 2014 to 2019, he was the Australian Statistician in charge of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Isidor Kalisch
Isidor Kalisch (15 November 1816 – 11 May 1886) was an American reform rabbi and writer. Early life He was born at Krotoschin in Prussia (now Poland), and was educated at Berlin, Breslau (Wrocław) and Prague. While pursuing his studies in theology and philosophy, he contributed to German periodicals. In 1842 he wrote a patriotic poem, entitled “Schlacht-Gesang der Deutschen” (Battle song of the Germans) which was set to music and became one of the popular songs of the day. In 1843, he preached the first German sermon ever delivered in his native town. Rabbi in the United States In 1848, he came to London, but passed on in 1849 to the United States. Ludwig Kalisch
Ludwig Kalisch (7 September 1814 in Lissa – 3 March 1882 in Paris) was a German-Jewish novelist. When only twelve years of age he left his home and became successively pedler, merchant, and teacher. He saved enough money to carry him through matriculation and the study of medicine and, later, languages and literature in Heidelberg and Munich. Settling in Mainz in 1843, he became editor of the '' Narrhalla'' (1843–46). A participant in the revolution of 1848-49, he was forced to leave Germany. He went to Paris, in 1850 to London, and from 1851 onward lived in Paris. Literary works Kalisch's forte was the humorous ballad. Many of his writings appeared in the ''feuilletons'' of the newspapers and in magazines. Marcus Kalisch
Marcus Kalisch (or Moritz) (May 16, 1828 – August 25, 1885) was a Jewish scholar born in Treptow, Pomerania, and died in Derbyshire, England. He was educated at Berlin University, where he studied classics, philology, and the Semitic languages, and at the Rabbinical College of Berlin. In 1848 he obtained degrees at Berlin and at Halle, and in the same year took part in the European struggle for freedom that resulted in the émeute of 1848. He was one of the pioneers of the critical study of the Old Testament in England. At one time he was secretary to the Chief Rabbi; in 1853 he became tutor in the Rothschild family and enjoyed leisure to produce his commentaries and other works. The first installment of his commentary on the Pentateuch was ''Exodus'' (1855); this was followed by ''Genesis'' (1858) and '' Leviticus'' in two parts (1867–1872). Paul Kalisch
Paul Kalisch (6 November 1855 in Berlin, Prussia – 27 January 1946 in St. Lorenz, Upper Austria) was a German opera singer. He was the son of David Kalisch, a Jewish Christian writer, founder of the '' Kladderadatsch''. Kalisch was destined for a career as an architect, but at a gathering at the home of his brother-in-law Paul Lindau, where Kalisch sang a few selections from Schubert and Wagner, his voice so impressed Pollini and Adelina Patti that they urged him to go on the stage. Shortly afterward Kalisch went to Italy to study under Leoni and Lamperti, and he made his debut at Varese in 1880 as Edgardo in ''Lucia di Lammermoor''. After a most successful tour through Italy and Spain he sang in 1883 at the royal operas at Munich, Berlin, and Vienna, and at the ''Stadttheater''s of Hamburg, Leipzig, and Cologne.
