Kalakkad S. Ramanarayana Iyer (; 10 October 1910 – 1992) was a Carnatic musician and composer born in Kalakkad, Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu, India. He was also awarded the Kalaimamani prize by the Government of Tamil Nadu in recognition of his dedication and service. Kalakad is a Municipality in Tirunelveli district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Kalakad is one of the 3 Municipalities of Tirunelveli District, and is one of the fastest-growing towns in the district. Etymology As per popular folklore, the name Kalakkad was due to one of the following: # The place was a forest full of 'kalaa' களா(Tamil word) tree; # It was a battlefield or 'kalam'களம் (Tamil word); # It was the capital of 'kalapirars' who ruled Tamil Nadu from this place. Carnatic Music
Carnatic music, known as or in the Dravidian languages, South Indian languages, is a system of music commonly associated with South India, including the modern Indian states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and Sri Lanka. It is one of two main subgenres of Indian classical music that evolved from ancient Hindu Texts and traditions, particularly the Samaveda. The Kalaimamani is the highest civilian award in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. These awards are given by the ''Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram'' (literature, music and theatre), a unit of the Directorate of Art and Culture, Government of Tamil Nadu, to recognise artists in the state for their achievements.
