Kalaeloa, Hawai'i
Kalaeloa () is a census-designated place (CDP) in Honolulu County, Hawaii, United States. The population was 2,364 at the 2020 census. The community occupies the location of the former Naval Air Station Barbers Point, which was closed in 1999 and subsequently transferred to the State of Hawaii. The geographical name, ''Ka lae loa'', means "long point" in Hawaiian and is the native name for what has been called Barbers Point on Oahu. The area was known as Barbers Point because Captain Henry Barber wrecked his ship on a coral shoal at this location on October 31, 1796. In 1993, after the federal government listed Barbers Point for closure, the state legislature established the Barbers Point Naval Air Station Redevelopment Commission (BPNAS-RC) to guide the redevelopment of the former military facilities comprising John Rodgers airfield and of land along the south shore of Oahu between the towns of Ewa, Kapolei, and Campbell Industrial Park. A census-designated place (CDP) is a concentration of population defined by the United States Census Bureau for statistical purposes only. AES Hawaii Power Plant
AES Hawaii Power Plant was a medium-size coal-fired electrical power station located in the south-west corner of a Hawaiian island of Oahu. Owned and operated by AES Hawaii, the plant was the only coal-fired power plant in the state of Hawaii, and was the state's leading single source of toxic pollutants. AES Hawaii consisted of a single unit on the grounds of Campbell Industrial Park, had a year-around capacity of 180 MWe, and in 2006 represented about 11% of Oahu's commercial electricity supply. The plant closed on September 1, 2022 as part of a state goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Barbers Point Light is a lighthouse on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. The lighthouse stands on Barbers Point outside of Kalaeloa on the southwest tip of the island. Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point
Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point is an air station of the United States Coast Guard located approximately 13½ miles west of Honolulu, at the Kalaeloa Airport, on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Initially the Coast Guard established a base on the Hawaiian Archipelago in 1945, with a pair of PBY-5 Catalinas and one Grumman G-21 Goose. The air unit maintained supervision for the windward side of Oahu. In 1949 the Command moved to Naval Air Station Barbers Point, and in 1965 the unit received its current designation of Coast Guard Air Station Barbers point. For 24 years the Sikorsky HH-52 Seaguard was the primary search-and-rescue helicopter, unit 1987 when it was retired and replaced with the Aérospatiale HH-65 Dolphin.
