Mason City is a city and the county seat of Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, United States. The population was 27,338 in the 2020 census, a decline from 29,172 in the 2000 census. History The region around what would later be first called Shibboleth was a summer home to the Sioux and Winnebago nations. The first settlement that became Shibboleth was established in 1853 at the confluence of the Winnebago River and Calmus Creek. The town had several names: Shibboleth, Masonic Grove, and Masonville until Mason City was adopted in 1855, in honor of a founder's son, Mason Long. KRIB
KRIB (1490 AM) is a radio station licensed to serve Mason City, Iowa. The station is owned by Alpha Media and airs an Adult Standards music format. First on-air in 1948, the station was assigned the KRIB call letters by the Federal Communications Commission. The Winter Dance Party KRIB was one of the first radio stations in Iowa to play rock and roll in the mid-1950s, thus attracting a young audience. In February 1959, the station was one of the sponsors of the Winter Dance Party at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, and the show's master of ceremonies was KRIB disc jockey Bob Hale. The show featured The Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly; infamously, all three perished in a plane crash just north of the Mason City airport that night. The station aired an adult contemporary format during the 1980s. The station's call letters reflect the ''Globe Gazette'' newspaper. The station began broadcasting in 1938 on the assigned frequency of 1210 kHz. It was owned by Lee Broadcasting, a subsidiary of the owner of the ''Globe Gazette'', Lee Enterprises. The founding general manager of KGLO and Lee Broadcasting was Francis C. Eighmey. KGLO began operation with only 250 watts of power. KYTC (102.7 FM, "Super Hits 102.7") is a radio station that broadcasts a classic hits music format. Licensed to Northwood, Iowa, U.S., it serves northern Iowa and southern Minnesota. The station is currently owned by Alpha Media, through licensee Digity 3E License, LLC. The station was originally operated by Northwood businessman, Marlin Hanson as an oldies radio station with an effective radiated power of 3,000 watts, then 6,000 watts. Hanson built the station because he bought the tower from the local cable company after they abandoned it and decided a radio station would be a good use for the empty tower.
