K-116 (Kansas Highway)
K-116 is a state highway in the northeast part of the U.S. state of Kansas. K-116's western terminus is at U.S. Route 75 (US-75) and K-16 in Holton, and the eastern terminus is at US-59 southwest of Atchison. The first of K-116 is co-designated with K-16. Also a brief section is co-designated with US-159 near the eastern terminus. The highway travels mostly through rural farmland and is a two-lane highway for its entire length. Before state highways were numbered in Kansas there were an informal network of marked routes known as auto trails in the early 20th century. The section between US-159 and the eastern terminus was part of the former Southwest Trail. K-116 was assigned on January 7, 1937, by the Kansas State Highway Commission, now known as the Kansas Department of Transportation. Holton, Kansas
Holton is a city in and the county seat of Jackson County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 3,401. History The party that chose the site of Holton started at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in May 1856. A train of six covered wagons, each drawn by two yoke of oxen, started the long trek to take Free State settlers to Kansas. They were financed by the Kansas Society of Milwaukee which was headed by Edward Dwight Holton, the Milwaukee abolitionist. They met General James H. Lane with two hundred men at Nebraska City, Nebraska, a rendezvous for Free State men. They followed the ''Jim Lane Road'' into Kansas approximately thirty miles. They came to Elk Creek, 2½ miles west of Holton, where they cut timbers to make a bridge, crossed it and made camp where Central School now stands. The ''Emporia Gazette'' is a daily newspaper in Emporia, Kansas. History William Allen White bought the newspaper for $3,000 ($ in dollars) in 1895. Through his editorship, over the next five decades, he became an iconic figure in American journalism and political life. Marysville is a city in and the county seat of Marshall County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 3,447. The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection is a large private map collection with over 150,000 maps and cartographic items. The collection was created by David Rumsey who, after making his fortune in real estate, focused initially on collecting 18th- and 19th century maps of North and South America, as this era "saw the rise of modern cartography."
