K. R. Nair
Rear Admiral Kesavapillai Ramakrishnan "Jerry" Nair (1915–2007) was a former Flag officer in the Indian Navy who served as the first Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command. Career Early career Nair was commissioned in the Royal Indian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RINVR) in 1942, and was promoted temporary acting lieutenant on 8 April 1943. In 1944, he attended a specialist anti-submarine course in the United Kingdom. On 21 January 1945, he was posted to HMIS ''Machlimar'' at Bombay, whose executive officer was Lieutenant-Commander Ram Dass Katari. Post-Independence Nair was promoted to acting commander (paid) on 31 December 1949 and to substantive commander on 30 June 1951. On 3 January 1955, he was appointed CO, INS ''Venduruthy'' at Cochin with the acting rank of captain, receiving promotion to the substantive rank on 31 December 1955. Rear admiral is a Two-star rank, two-star flag officer rank in the Indian Navy. It is the third-highest active rank in the Indian Navy. Benjamin Abraham Samson
Vice Admiral (India), Vice Admiral Benjamin Abraham 'Chippy' Samson, PVSM (25 September 1916 – 18 March 2008) was an Indian Navy Admiral who served as the Flag Officer Commanding Indian Fleet from 8 January 1964 to 31 May 1966. He was the first Naval Officer to serve as the Commandant of the National Defence Academy. His daughter is the famous Bharatanatyam dancer, Leela Samson. Early life Samson was born on 25 September 1916, in Poona in Bombay Presidency, to Abraham Samuel Samson Killekar and Sarah Shalom Bapuji Israel Wargharkar. The Samson family was a part of the Bene Israel community which has base from villages in the Konkan area of western Maharashtra near Mumbai and resided in the Ohel David Synagogue. Jal Cursetji
Admiral Jal Cursetji, PVSM (20 May 1919 – 29 January 1991) was a former Flag Officer in the Indian Navy. He served as the ninth Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) from 1 March 1976 until 28 February 1979. He was the first hydrographer to serve as the CNS. Born in a Parsi family in Jabalpur, Cursetji joined the Training Ship Dufferin in 1935, where his batchmate was Nilakanta Krishnan. After training on various ships of the Royal Navy, he served on the Aubrietia-class sloop and the Bathurst-class corvette . In 1944, he commanded ''HMIS Bombay''. After specialising in hydrography in the United Kingdom, he was tasked with the planning of setting up a hydrographic office in India. He served as the Surveyor-in-Charge, Marine Survey of India and commanded the survey ship INS Investigator. He was the first Indian to serve as the Chief Hydrographer of the Navy, from 1955 to 1957. Nilakanta Krishnan
Vice Admiral Nilakanta Krishnan, PVSM, DSC (8 June 1919 – 30 January 1982), was a former flag officer in the Indian Navy. He was the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. Born in a reputed Tamil Brahmin family in Nagercoil, Krishnan joined the Training Ship Dufferin in 1935, where his batchmate was Jal Cursetji. After training on various ships of the Royal Navy, he was posted to the survey ship HMIS ''Investigator''. During the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran in August 1941, Krishnan boarded and captured an Iranian gunboat after a firefight. For this action, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the first awarded to the Royal Indian Navy. Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command
The Eastern Naval Command is one of the three command-level formations of the Indian Navy. It is headquartered in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The command is responsible for the all naval forces in the Bay of Bengal and parts of the Indian Ocean and the naval establishments on the east coast of India. The Command was established on 1 March 1968. Admiral Adhar Kumar Chatterji (4 March 1914 – 6 August 2001) was an Admiral in the Indian Navy. He served as the 6th Chief of the Naval Staff, from 4 March 1966, until 28 February 1970. He was the first Indian officer of the navy to hold the rank of full Admiral. He is credited with the transformation of the Indian Navy. He made sweeping changes and restructured the navy, creating the Western and Eastern Naval Commands and the Western Fleet.
