K Balachander
K, or k, is the eleventh letter in the Latin alphabet, used in the modern English alphabet, the alphabets of other western European languages and others worldwide. Its name in English is ''kay'' (pronounced ), plural ''kays''. The letter K usually represents the voiceless velar plosive. History The letter K comes from the Greek letter Κ (kappa), which was taken from the Semitic kaph, the symbol for an open hand. This, in turn, was likely adapted by Semitic tribes who had lived in Egypt from the hieroglyph for "hand" representing /ḏ/ in the Egyptian word for hand, ⟨ ḏ-r-t⟩ (likely pronounced in Old Egyptian). The Semites evidently assigned it the sound value instead, because their word for hand started with that sound. K was brought into the Latin alphabet with the name ''ka'' /kaː/ to differentiate it from C, named ''ce'' (pronounced /keː/) and Q, named ''qu'' and pronounced /kuː/. Ethiroli
''Ethiroli'' () is a 1970 Indian Tamil-language legal drama film, directed by K. Balachander, featuring Sivaji Ganesan. The film had musical score by K. V. Mahadevan and became a commercial success. It was also the only collaboration between Balachander and Ganesan. Plot The story revolves around Advocate Shankar, who gifts 7 principles to his daughter which he wants her to follow. In a critical case that he takes up, Shankar ends up breaking each principle which causes misery in his case and personal life. Naan Avanillai (1974 Film)
''Naan Avanillai'' () is a 1974 Indian Tamil-language film starring Gemini Ganesan. Produced by Ganesan himself, it was directed by K. Balachander. It was adapted from the 1962 Marathi language play ''To Mee Navhech'', written by Pralhad Keshav Atre. The film deals with a man who woos and marries several women while he takes on as many different identities. ''Naan Avanillai'' was released on 7 June 1974. The film was commercially successful and received critical acclaim. Ganesan's won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Tamil. It was later remade into a 2007 Tamil film with the same title and a 2008 Kannada film titled '' Buddhivantha''. ''Aval Oru Thodar Kathai'' () is a 1974 Indian Tamil-language drama film directed by K. Balachander. The story revolves around a working middle-class woman, who sacrifices her desires to support her large family. The lead role was played by Sujatha in her first Tamil film, which was also her first starring role. Kamal Haasan, Vijayakumar, Jai Ganesh, M. G. Soman and Sripriya played key roles. ''Sollathaan Ninaikkiren'' () is a 1973 Indian Tamil-language film, written and directed by K. Balachander. Starring S. V. Subbaiah, Sivakumar, Kamal Haasan, Jayachitra, Srividya, Shubha and Jayasudha, it is based on the novel ''Ilavu Kaatha Kili'' () by Manian. The film was released on 7 December 1973. It was remade in Telugu as ''Ammayilu Jagratha''. Balachander remade the film in Kannada as ''Sundara Swapnagalu''. ''Arangetram'' ( ) is a 1973 Indian Tamil-language drama film written and directed by K. Balachander. The film stars Prameela, leading an ensemble cast that includes S. V. Subbaiah, Sivakumar, Sasikumar, Kamal Haasan, M. N. Rajam, Sundari Bai and Senthamarai. It revolves around a young woman who takes to prostitution to support her conservative but poor family. ''Arangetram'' marked Kamal Haasan's first adult role, while Prameela, Jayachitra and Jayasudha made their acting debut in Tamil with this film. V. Kumar composed the music for the film, which was the last Balachander film he worked on. Cinematography was handled by B. S. Lokanath, and editing by N. R. Kittu.
