Jutta Rabe
Jutta Rabe (born 1955) is a German journalist and a former treasurer of the Berlin chapter of the German Federation of Journalists. Life Jutta Rabe studied economy and journalism. She worked as a freelancer for the German TV-magazine Spiegel-TV for a number of years, as well as for Focus TV, ZDF, ARTE and NDR. Her book, ''Die Estonia: Tragödie eines Schiffsuntergangs'' (, ), about the alleged cover-up of the true cause of the September 1994 M/S Estonia passenger ferry disaster, was made into the 2003 film ''Baltic Storm''. The video footage of her group's diving expedition to the Estonia shipwreck allegedly reveals holes in the ship's hull, suggesting that explosives played a role in the tragedy. Spiegel-TV has dissociated itself from her coverage of the Estonia disaster. The Deutscher Journalisten-Verband (DJV) or German Journalists Association is among the largest journalists' organizations in Europe. The DJV has its headquarters in Berlin and has about 38,000 members. The chairman since 2003 has been the journalist Michael Konken, while the deputy national chairman since 2007 is Ulrike Kaiser. The Focus TV Productions GmbH is a German TV production company headquartered in Munich. It is a subsidiary of ''Focus Magazine Publishing'', a Hubert Burda Media company, and was founded in 1995. Arte (; (), sometimes stylized in lowercase or uppercase in its logo) is a European public service channel dedicated to culture. Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR; ''Northern German Broadcasting'') is a public broadcasting, public radio and television broadcaster, based in Hamburg. M/S Estonia
MS ''Estonia'' was a cruiseferry built in 1980 at the West German shipyard Meyer Werft in Papenburg. In 1993, she was sold to Nordström & Thulin for use on Estline's Tallinn–Stockholm route. The ship's sinking on 28 September 1994, in the Baltic Sea between Sweden, Finland and Estonia, was one of the worst peacetime maritime disasters of the 20th century, claiming 852 lives. The official report concluded that the bow door had separated from the vessel, pulling the ramp ajar. The ship was already listing because of poor cargo distribution, and the list increased rapidly, flooding the decks and the cabins. Shortly, power failed altogether, inhibiting search and rescue, and a full-scale emergency was not declared for 90 minutes. Of the 989 on board, 138 were rescued. ''Baltic Storm'' is a 2003 film written and directed by Reuben Leder about the 1994 MS ''Estonia'' disaster. Based on the book ''Die Estonia: Tragödie eines Schiffsuntergangs'' by German journalist Jutta Rabe, the film focuses on the supposed transport of defense materials by the Swedish Armed Forces, and alleged cover-up of the true cause of the disaster. Plot The plot portrays the Swedish government as being responsible for using the ship to covertly transport Russian high-tech components to the United States. The story is uncovered by a young female journalist, not unlike Rabe herself. According to Rabe, divers hired by the Swedish government (signing contracts swearing lifetime secrecy) spent hours breaking into cabins frantically searching for a black attaché case carried by a Russian space technology dealer, Aleksandr Voronin (who died 2002).
