Justus Köhncke (born 1966 in Gießen) is a German techno producer and pop musician from Cologne. Köhncke was a member of the house trio Whirlpool Productions, along with Hans Nieswandt and Eric D. Clark. Together, they had a number one hit in Italy in 1997 with their house track " From Disco to Disco". Since 1999, he has released tracks on the Cologne label Kompakt. In his music, he combines minimal techno with disco and Krautrock elements. Musical collaborations In 2004, Köhncke produced the single "Durch die Nacht" for Andreas Dorau. He also worked with Dirk von Lowtzow of Tocotronic, as well as for Phantom/Ghost. In the last few years, he has also worked on soundtracks with Irmin Schmidt, a member of the band Can. Together with Kai Althoff they produced under the name Subtle Tease. In 2013, he co-created a side project with Hot Chip frontman, Alexis Taylor. Can (band)
Can (stylised as CAN) was a German experimental rock band formed in Cologne in 1968 by Holger Czukay (bass, tape editing), Irmin Schmidt (keyboards), Michael Karoli (guitar), and Jaki Liebezeit (drums). The group used several vocalists, most prominently the American Malcolm Mooney (1968–70) and the Japanese Damo Suzuki (1970–73). They have been widely hailed as pioneers of the German krautrock scene. They specialize in microhouse and minimal techno, and are known for their ''Total'' compilation series which reached its seventeenth installment in 2017. "So Weit Wie Noch Nie" (German for ''As Far As Never Before'') is a 2002 song by German electronic musician Jürgen Paape. The single is considered his signature song and was included on the Kompakt label's compilation ''Total 3'' in 2002 and later on Paape's own album '' Kompilation''. It was placed in The Pitchfork 500, with ''Pitchfork'' calling it a "swaying, heady blend of weighty bass, spray-can hisses, and warm-blanket synths", as well as "some of the most thoroughly pleasurable techno of the 000sdecade". The track samples the 1972 song "Vielleicht Schon Morgen" by Daliah Lavi, using also vocals by Sonya Lübke. It has been covered by Justus Köhncke for his album '' Was ist Musik'' (2002). Kai Althoff (born 1966 in Cologne) is a German visual artist and musician. Life and work Kai Althoff was born in Cologne, Germany, in February 1966. He is a multimedia artist and a painter. Borrowing from moments of history, religious iconography, and counter-cultural movements, Althoff creates imaginary environments in which paintings, sculpture, drawing, video, and found objects commingle. Tapping a multitude of sources, from Germanic folk traditions to recent popular culture, from medieval and gothic religious imagery to early modern expressionism, Althoff’s characters inhabit imaginary worlds that serve as allegories for human experience and emotion. Irmin Schmidt
Irmin Schmidt (born 29 May 1937) is a German keyboardist and composer, best known as a founding member of the band Can. Biography Schmidt was born in Berlin, Germany, began his studies in music at the conservatorium in Dortmund, at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and he studied composition in Karlheinz Stockhausen's Cologne Courses for New Music at the , Cologne. He started work mainly as a conductor and performed in concerts with the Bochum Symphony; the Vienna Symphony; and the Dortmund Ensemble for New Music, which he founded in 1962. During this time, he received several conducting awards. Schmidt also worked as Kapellmeister at the Theater Aachen, as docent for musical theatre and chanson at the Schauspielschule Bochum (drama school), and as concert pianist.
