Justine Kerfoot
Justine Kerfoot (1906 – May 30, 2001) was an American writer and outdoors-woman who moved to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Boundary Waters in Minnesota in 1927 and helped establish the Gunflint Lodge and the overall Gunflint Trail area. She was the author of two published books and co-authored a third. She also wrote a column, "On the Gunflint Trail", that ran weekly for 42 years in the ''Cook County News Herald''. She fully experienced outdoor life in the wilderness in an around the Gunflint Lodge related to operation of the lodge, and visiting and traveling with the residents of the forest including trappers and Chippewa Indians, Chippewa Indian families. She developed friendships with numerous Chippewa Indian families who lived north of the lodge on the Canadian border. They helped each other, traveled in the wilderness together, attended each other's celebrations and transacted business. They taught her wilderness skills. In the forward to the book ''Woman of ... Barrington, Illinois
Barrington is a village in Cook County and Lake County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,722 at the 2020 census. A northwest suburb of Chicago, the area features wetlands, forest preserves, parks, and horse trails in a country-suburban setting. Boundary Waters
The Boundary Waters, also called the Quetico-Superior Country, is a region of wilderness straddling the Canada–United States border between Ontario and Minnesota, in the area just west of Lake Superior. While "Boundary Waters" is a common name for this region, the two nations also share extensive ''boundary waters'' along their border, beyond this region. This region is part of the Superior National Forest in northeastern Minnesota, and in Canada it includes La Verendrye Provincial Park, La Verendrye and Quetico Provincial Park, Quetico Provincial Parks in Ontario. Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota may also be considered part of the Boundary Waters. Quetico Provincial Park
Quetico Provincial Park is a large wilderness park in Northwestern Ontario, Canada, known for its excellent canoeing and fishing. The park shares its southern border with Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, which is part of the larger Superior National Forest. These large wilderness parks are often collectively referred to as the Boundary Waters or the Quetico-Superior Country. Geography The park includes over 2000 unofficial, unimproved wilderness campsites spread throughout more than 600 lakes. Canoeists require permit reservations and in-season may enter the Quetico only via six Ranger Stations, which serve 21 specific entry points. Visitors may drive to three of these ranger stations: Dawson Trail, Atikokan, and Lac La Croix.
