Justin Time Records
Justin Time Records is a Canadian record company and independent record label founded in Montreal by Jim West. It was established in 1983 and specialises in jazz and blues. Although Justin Time initially recorded Canadian musicians such as Oliver Jones, Ranee Lee and Diana Krall, it grew to include Americans such as David Murray and the World Saxophone Quartet. Its catalogue also includes Paul Bley, Jeri Brown, and D. D. Jackson. Nettwerk Music Group is the umbrella company for Nettwerk Records, Nettwerk Management, and Nettwerk One Publishing. Established in 1984, the Vancouver-based company was created by Nettwerk principals Terry McBride and Mark Jowett as a record label to distribute recordings by the band Moev, but the label expanded in Canada and internationally. Specializing in electronic music genres such as alternative dance and industrial, the label also became a major player in pop and rock in the late 1980s and 1990s, with label and management clients including Coldplay, Sarah McLachlan, Dido, and Barenaked Ladies. Billy Bang
Billy Bang (September 20, 1947 – April 11, 2011), born William Vincent Walker, was an American free jazz violinist and composer. Brian Hughes (musician)
Brian Hughes (born 5 May 1955) is a Canadian guitarist whose work draws from smooth jazz and Latin music (genre), Latin music. Hughes also plays oud, bouzouki, and balalaika. For over twenty years, he has worked in the studio with singer-songwriter Loreena McKennitt. He co-produced many of her recordings and leads her touring band. Music career Hughes grew up in Alberta, Canada and studied at Grant MacEwan College (now MacEwan University) in Edmonton and the Banff School of Fine Arts with jazz guitarists Ed Bickert and Gene Bertoncini. In 1981 he moved temporarily to Los Angeles where he studied at the Musicians Institute, Guitar Institute with Pat Martino, Joe Diorio, and Robben Ford. In 1987 Hughes moved to Toronto where he began working with harpist Loreena McKennitt. Thomas Hellman
Thomas Hellman (born 1975) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, radio columnist, and author. Born to an American father and a French mother, he sings both in French and English. Music and writing Hellman's M.A thesis in French literature in McGill University explored the subject of bilingualism, creativity and identity in the works of Samuel Beckett. Hellman has released seven albums. He writes a literary column for ''Radio-Canada''. He has published essays on music, literature and identity in several French Canadian literary reviews, including ''Liberté'', ''L’inconvénient'' and ''Moebius.'' Murray Seafield St George Head (born 5 March 1946) is an English actor and singer. Sonny Greenwich
Sonny Greenwich, (born January 1, 1936) is a Canadian guitarist. He has played in major Canadian and American cities including a concert at Carnegie Hall. He has performed with musicians such as Charles Lloyd, Wayne Shorter, Pharoah Sanders, McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, John Handy and Sun Ra. Biography Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Sonny Greenwich first drew notice for his style in 1959 in Toronto, Ontario. In 1965 he performed in New York City at The Village Gate with saxophonist Charles Lloyd. Greenwich's reputation, grew by word of mouth, bringing him to the attention of John Handy, with whom he played from December 1966 through March 1967 in Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco and New York playing with another Canadian, bassist Don Thompson. Wray Downes
Wray Downes (January 14, 1931 – March 19, 2020) was a Canadian jazz pianist. Downes was born in Toronto. He was classically trained, having studied at Trinity College, London, but began playing jazz in 1952 as a student at the Paris Conservatoire. While in France, he played with Sidney Bechet and Bill Coleman. After returning to Canada in the middle of the decade, he played with Oscar Peterson and was a recurring house pianist at the Town Tavern in Toronto, playing with Roy Eldridge, Coleman Hawkins, Clark Terry, and Lester Young. He played for many years with Peter Appleyard and Dave Young, and also worked with Archie Alleyne, Pete Magadini, Buddy Tate, and Dave Turner. He died on March 19, 2020 in Montreal. Hilario Durán (born 1953, Havana) is a Cuban-Canadian jazz pianist. Durán studied at ''Conservatorio "Amadeo Roldán"'' Amadeo Roldan Music Institute in Havana, studying tumbao with Evaristo Aparicio, composition and conducting from German Pifferrer, and orchestration from Guillermo Barreto. He formed a group in the 1970s called Los D'Siempre, which melded traditional Cuban elements with those of modern jazz. He joined Arturo Sandoval's band from 1981 to 1990. Biography Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Disterheft grew up in the District of North Vancouver, British Columbia where she attended Handsworth Secondary School. Upon graduation, she won scholarship to attend Humber College in Toronto, Ontario where she studied under Don Thompson.
