Justin Kotelawala
Justin Kotelawala, CBE, JP (22 August 1904 - 2 April 1973) was a Sri Lankan businessman and Senator. He was the former Chairman of the Ceylinco Group. Early life and education He was born to John Kotelawala, a police inspector turned businessman and Alice Elisabeth Kotelawala, daughter of Mudaliyar Don Charles Gemoris Attygalle, wealthy land and mine owner. His elder brother was Sir John Kotelawala, the third Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and his sister was Freda Kotelawala, who married Dr C. V. S. Corea, a Homeopathy practitioner, their sons were Dr Gamani Corea and Vijaya Corea. The Kotelawalas lived in considerable comfort owing to the considerable land and mine holdings of his grandfather Mudaliyar Attygalle, which his father managed following the death of his grandfather. Senate Of Ceylon
The Senate was the upper chamber of the parliament of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) established in 1947 by the Soulbury Commission. The Senate was appointed and indirectly elected rather than directly elected. It was housed in the old Legislative Council building in Colombo Fort and met for the first time on 12 November 1947. The Senate was abolished on 2 October 1971 by the eighth amendment to the Soulbury Constitution, prior to the adoption of the new Republican Constitution of Sri Lanka on 22 May 1972. In 2010 there were proposals to reintroduce the Senate. Punyakante Wijenaike
Punyakante Wijenaike (born Colombo, 1933- 8th March 2023) was a Sri Lankan writer. She has been described as "one of the most underestimated fiction writers currently at work in the English language." Work Wijenaike writes primarily in English, including fiction, short stories and anthologies. Her first collection of short stories, ''The Third Woman'', was published in 1963. Since then she has published four collections of short stories and six novels, with more than 100 stories published in newspapers, journals and anthologies in Sri Lanka and abroad, and has had her works broadcast in Sri Lanka and on the BBC. Although she has spent most of her life in Colombo, she initially used rural villages as her theme, only later turning to urban themes. Her writings highlight "the tyranny of community or a group towards its weaker members." Her 1998 novel, An Enemy within, uncovers "the mask that tend to hide the reality of present times." Sir Arthur Marcelles de Silva, KCMG, KBE, FRCS (5 November 1879 - 22 September 1957) was a Ceylonese surgeon. He was a member of the Public Service Commission. Early life and education Born to Mudaliyar William Marcellus De Silva, he was educated at the Royal College, Colombo. Having missed by four marks the Ceylon Government University Scholarship for Oxbridge study in classics in 1898, he shifted to study in medicine and attended the London Hospital Medical College, becoming the first Ceylonese postgraduate student to gain Membership of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England (MRCS) and Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians (LRCP) in 1903. Colombo Municipal Council
The Colombo Municipal Council is the municipal governing body of Colombo, the largest city and financial centre in Sri Lanka. It consists of a directly elected executive Mayor of Colombo, current elect is Rosy Senanayake, and 119 elected 119 municipal councilors. The council was formed in 1865, it first met in 1866 and derives most of its powers from ''Municipal Council Ordinance No. 29 of 1947''. It is the oldest and the largest local government authority in Sri Lanka which covers a resident population of over 600,000 (as of 2001). Oxbridge MA
In the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, and Dublin, Bachelors of Arts are promoted to the degree of Master of Arts or Master in Arts (MA) on application after six or seven years' seniority as members of the university (including years as an undergraduate). Fredrick Richard Senanayake
Fredrick Richard Senanayake (known to as F. R. Senanayake) (October 20, 1882 – January 1, 1926) was a Ceylonesen lawyer and independence activist. A leading member of the Sri Lankan independence movement, he was an elected member of the Colombo Municipal Council. He was the principal supporter of the early political career of his younger brother D. S. Senanayake, who would go on to lead Sri Lanka's independence movement, becoming the first Prime Minister of independent Sri Lanka in 1947.
