Alexander Porter
Alexander Porter (June 24, 1785January 13, 1844) was an attorney, politician, and planter, who served as United States Senator from Louisiana from 1833 to 1837. Born in Ireland, he emigrated in 1801 at the age of 16 to the United States. He served a term in the statehouse from 1816 to 1818, and as a state Supreme Court justice from 1821 to 1833. Biography Early life Born in County Donegal, Ireland, Alexander Porter immigrated to the U.S. in 1801 with an uncle, who settled in Nashville, Tennessee. He received a limited schooling, but attended the now-defunct Clemenceau College. He " read the law" as an apprentice and was admitted to the bar in 1807. Career In 1807, he commenced practice in Attakapas Parish, Territory of Orleans. (In 1811, the area around Franklin, Louisiana, became St. Mary Parish.) Newton Hazelton Porter
Newton Hazelton Porter (April 13, 1877 – 1945) was a justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court from 1938 to 1945. Hazelton was born on April 13, 1877, in Somerville, New Jersey, the son of Edward Baldwin and Emma Jane (Hazelton) Porter. He was educated at evening school, he received Bachelor of Laws from New York University in 1902. Admitted to New Jersey bar as attorney in 1904 and as counsellor in 1907. He practiced law from 1910 to 1924 until being appointed for judgeship. From 1921 to 1923, Porter served as the President of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce. He was a judge on the Court Common Pleas in Essex County from 1924 to 1926 and on the Circuit Court from 1926 to 1938. He was appointed to Supreme Court in 1938 and served until his death in 1945. Samuel Lowry Porter, Baron Porter, (7 February 1877 – 13 February 1956) was a British judge. Early life and career Born in Leeds, Porter was educated at the Perse School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he took a Third in Classics and a Second in Law. He was called to the bar by the Inner Temple in 1905. His legal career was interrupted by World War I. Commissioned into the British Army, he ended the war as a captain on the general list. He was appointed MBE for his war service. He was appointed King's Counsel in 1925. He was Recorder of Newcastle under Lyme from 1928 to 1932 and Recorder of Walsall from 1932 to 1934. Judicial career On 7 November 1934, he was appointed to the High Court, assigned to the King's Bench Division, and received the customary knighthood on 24 November. Thomas Porter (Vermont Politician)
Thomas Porter (February 15, 1734 – May 30, 1833) was a Connecticut and Vermont military and political figure who served as Speaker of the Vermont House of Representatives. Biography Thomas Porter was born in Farmington, Connecticut Colony, on February 15, 1734 and became a farmer in Cornwall. He served with the British during the French and Indian War and held several local offices, including member of the Connecticut House of Representatives. Porter served against the British at the start of the American Revolution as a captain in the Connecticut Militia, and relocated to Tinmouth, Vermont in 1779. In 1780 Porter was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives. He served until 1782 and was Speaker of the House during his entire House tenure. Porter resigned as Speaker to accept election to the Governor's Council, on which he served until 1795. Silas Wright Porter (January 1, 1857 – May 17, 1937) was a justice of the Kansas Supreme Court from July 1, 1905, to January 8, 1923. Life and education He was born January 1, 1857, in Warren County, Illinois on a farm near Monmouth, Illinois the son of Judge John Porter and Mary Ellen (Robbert) Porter. Raised and educated in Monmouth he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Monmouth College in 1879. He then continued his studies at the college and obtained a Master of Arts degree in 1882, followed by his Doctor of Laws degree in 1907. His final education in preparation for the bar was done in his father office, and he was admitted to the bar in 1881. He taught in the district school for one term while still at college, and a second term after his graduation. In 1887, he married a Monmouth native Jessie Kirkpatrick Babcock who was the daughter of George Babcock originally from Wales, Massachusetts.
