Andrew Holt (May 20, 1855 – February 11, 1948) was an American jurist. Born in East Union, Minnesota, Holt went to Gustavus Adolphus College and then graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1880. Holt was admitted to the Minnesota bar in 1881 and then practiced law in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He served as municipal judge and then as district court judge in 1904. List Of Justices Of The Arkansas Supreme Court
The following is a list of justices of the Arkansas Supreme Court. Article VI, Section 1, of the Arkansas Constitution of 1836 established a Supreme Court; Section 2 declared it would consist of three judges, including a chief justice. The Reconstruction Constitution of 1868, which placed the state under military control, added two justices; the Arkansas Constitution of 1874 rolled back the expansion, but stipulated that once the population of the state should "amount to one million, the General Assembly may, if deemed necessary, increase the number of judges of the Supreme Court to five." In 1889, the population milestone was reached, and the legislature authorized a total of five justices. Constitutional sanction of the enlargement came in 1924 with voter approval of Amendment 9, which also allowed for the future legislative creation of two additional judgeships. John Holt (Lord Chief Justice)
Sir John Holt (23 December 1642 β 5 March 1710) was an English lawyer who served as Lord Chief Justice of England from 17 April 1689 to his death. He is frequently credited with playing a major role in ending the prosecution of witches in English law. Biography Holt was born in Abingdon in Berkshire (now Oxfordshire), the son of Sir Thomas Holt, MP for that town, and his wife, Susan, the daughter of John Peacock of Chieveley, also in Berkshire. He was educated at John Roysse's Free School in Abingdon (now Abingdon School) from 1652 to 1658, Gray's Inn and Oriel College, Oxford. He purchased Redgrave Manor in Suffolk, which had been the seat of the Bacon family in 1702, when debts forced the fifth baronet, Sir Robert Bacon, to sell the estate. A letter in the Bodleian Library reads: "The celebrated Dr Radcliffe, the physician ... took special pains to preserve the life of LCJ Holt's wife, whom he attended out of spite to her husband, who wished her dead." Ryves Holt (1696 β May 8, 1763) was an American judge who served as chief justice of the Delaware Supreme Court from 1745 to 1763. Biography Born in 1696, Holt, a resident of Philadelphia, was involved in trade with the West Indies before being appointed as naval officer of Lewes, Delaware. He arrived at Lewis in 1721, and held numerous offices in the following years. He was named high sheriff of Delaware in 1727, the same time he was serving as Collector of Public Levy for Lewes and Rehoboth, and Indian River Hundreds. He was named Overseer of the Highways for Lewes and Rehoboth in 1728, and also served as Justice of the Peace. For twelve years, starting in 1733, he occupied the important post of King's Attorney for Sussex county, was for two years, at least, Clerk and Prothonotary of the Courts, and served nine years, from 1738 to 1747, as Speaker of the State Council.
