James Gibson (judge)
James Gibson (1902 in Salem, Washington County, New York – May 29, 1992 in Glens Falls, Warren County, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Life He graduated from Princeton University in 1923. Then he studied law privately and attended Albany Law School for one year. He was admitted to the bar in 1926, and practiced law in Hudson Falls, New York. He married Judith Angell, and they had two daughters. In 1935, he was elected District Attorney of Washington County, a position his father had held also. During World War II, he served as a captain in the United States Army. In 1952, he was elected to the New York Supreme Court (4th District), and re-elected in 1966. He sat on the Appellate Division (3rd Dept.) from 1956 to 1969. He was Presiding Justice from 1964 on. In 1964, the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance was challenged as a violation of the constitutional separation of church and state. John Bannister Gibson
John Bannister Gibson (November 8, 1780 – May 3, 1853) was a Pennsylvania attorney, politician in the state legislature, and judge, including years on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court from 1816 to his death in 1853. He served as chief justice on the court for 24 years. In 1821, Gibson was elected as a member of the American Philosophical Society. Early life Born in Perry County, Pennsylvania, Gibson was named for John Banister, a Virginia hero of the American Revolution. Gibson's father, George Gibson, also fought in the war and remained in service after its end. George Gibson was killed in an expedition to the Great Black Swamp in northwest Ohio during the Northwest Indian Wars, when Gibson was eleven years old. In 1795 or 1796, Gibson was sent to Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where he remained about four years. Rankin MacDougal Gibson (1916-2001) was a Democratic lawyer from Missouri who settled in Ohio. He occupied positions in the administration of Governor Michael DiSalle, and was appointed to the Ohio Supreme Court in 1963 and 1964. Rankin Gibson was the son of Alexander and Murle Fletcher Gibson. He was born October 9, 1916, in Unionville, Missouri. He attended Northeast Missouri State Teachers College 1934 to 1936, and graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law in 1939. He passed the bar that year and opened a practice in Unionville. In 1940, he began working as an attorney for T.H. Mastin & Co., an insurance company in St. Louis, Missouri. From 1945 to 1951, Gibson worked for the Veteran's Administration in Des Moines, Iowa, St. Paul, Minnesota, and Washington, D.C. He earned a bachelor of science in law from St. Paul College of Law in 1948 and a master of law from George Washington Law School in 1950.
