Jurong Island Highway
Jurong Island Highway (; ms, Lebuhraya Pulau Jurong; ta, ஜூரோங் தீவு விரைவுச்சாலை) is a major highway in Singapore which links Jurong Pier Road in Jurong Port of the Pulau Ujong, main island to Jurong Island. It was opened in March 1999. It is also the only highway within Jurong Island. There are plans to build a second causeway to link the Western end of Jurong Island Highway and Gul Road in Jurong Industrial Estate, Mainland Singapore but the plan was put on hold due to the possibility that the causeway might affect the passage of ships to the shipyards in the Southern part of Jurong Industrial Area. Ayer Rajah Expressway
The Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) extends from the western end of the Marina Coastal Expressway in the south of Singapore to Tuas in the west near the Tuas Second Link to Malaysia. Together with the Marina Coastal Expressway and the East Coast Parkway, it forms a second east-west link to complement the role played by the Pan Island Expressway. As from 29 December 2013, ECP and AYE are no longer linked together after MCE was opened. History Construction on the expressway commenced in 1983, with the first two phases completed by 1988. This section involved the widening of several existing roads along the way, such as Ayer Rajah Road and Upper Ayer Rajah Road, as well as the construction of what was then the longest road viaduct, the Keppel Viaduct, from where the eastern end of the expressway commences. A highway is any public or private road or other public way on land. It is used for major roads, but also includes other public roads and public tracks. Jurong Pier Road
Jurong () is a major geographical region located at the south-westernmost point of the West Region of Singapore. Although mostly vaguely defined, the region's extent roughly covers the planning areas of Jurong East, Jurong West, Boon Lay, and Pioneer, along with Jurong Island in the Western Islands cluster and the southernmost portions of the Western Water Catchment. Should it be described at its greatest historical extent, the region can also include present-day Bukit Batok and Tuas. Jurong also covers several offshore islands as well, including Pulau Damar Laut and Pulau Samulun, both of which are located within the planning areas of Jurong East and Boon Lay respectively; along with the aforementioned Jurong Island. Jurong Port
Jurong Port Pte Ltd is a port operator headquartered in Singapore. Jurong Port, which operates the only multi-purpose port in Singapore, handles bulk, break-bulk and containerised cargo. It handled over 40,000 vessel-calls annually in 2019. The port owns and operates its own subzone located in the town of Jurong East in Singapore. Pulau Ujong
Singapore Island, or Mainland Singapore, is the main constituent island of the sovereign island country and city-state of the Republic of Singapore. Jurong Island
Jurong Island is an island located to the southwest of the main island of Singapore. It was formed from the amalgamation of seven offshore islands, the islands of Pulau Ayer Chawan, Pulau Ayer Merbau, Pulau Merlimau, Pulau Pesek, Pulau Pesek Kechil (also called Terumbu Pesek), Pulau Sakra (which was a previous merger of Pulau Sakra and Pulau Bakau), Pulau Seraya, Pulau Meskol, Pulau Mesemut Laut, Pulau Mesemut Darat and Anak Pulau. This was done through Singapore's land reclamation efforts. Land reclamation on Jurong Island was completed on 25 September 2009, 20 years earlier than scheduled. Jalan Buroh
Jalan Buroh () is a major arterial road in western Singapore. It runs along the Industrial sector, industrial areas of Pandan, Tanjong Penjuru and Pioneer. Etymology "Buroh" in the old spelling of "Buruh" means "labour" in Malay Language, Malay. As with many Malay roads in Singapore, it still retains the older spelling. History The road was built during the era of industrialization in the 60s. A part of the road was originally named "Jalan Kimia" ("''Kimia''" meaning "''chemistry''" in Malay), it was renamed to "Jalan Buroh" in 1972. The name was chosen to reflect the industrial nature of the area. Other roads in the area also bare Malay names, including "Jalan Pabrik" (Jurong Port Road), "Jalan Gudang" (Jurong Pier Road), "Jalan Gerabak" (Tractor Road) of which many have been renamed to English by JTC Corporation. Roads In Singapore
Road names in Singapore come under the purview of Street and Building Names Board of the Urban Redevelopment Authority. In 1967, the Advisory Committee on the Naming of Roads and Streets was formed to name roads in Singapore. The committee was eventually renamed the Street and Building Names Board (SBNB) in 2003. The secretariat role of SBNB was taken over by Urban Redevelopment Authority in 2010 and SBNB is under the Ministry of National Development of Singapore. The (URA) officially took over the in 2010, and now holds the responsibility of giving our streets appropriate names to honour the heritage of different areas on the island. All public streets, including roads for vehicular traffic and pedestrian malls, as well as private roads that are non-gated are officially named.
