Juno (plant)
''Iris'' subg. ''Scorpiris'', commonly called Juno, is a subgenus of Iris, representing the smooth-bulbed bulbous irises. For a while it was an independent genus ''Juno'' Tratt. in some classifications. There are around 60 different species of Juno irises, making it the largest group of bulbous irises. They generally have thick fleshy storage roots (between a few and to several) under a fleshy-like bulb. Most are native to the Middle East and Central Asia (excluding China). There is a single Mediterranean species, '' Iris planifolia''. All the species are dormant in summer and then grow leaves in mid-winter or early spring. Many of the bulbs produce scented flowers. Most bulbs are not frost hardy and are best grown in a bulb frame or alpine house. It consists of a single section, ''Scorpiris''. Section ''Scorpiris'' *'' Iris aitchisonii'' Baker *'' Iris albomarginata'' R.C.Foster *'' Iris almaatensis'' Pavlov *''Iris aucheri'' (Baker) Sealy (including ''I. sindjarensis'') * ...

The flowers are 2 inches (5 cm) across, varying in colour from brownish to greenish or greyish. Distribution It is an alpine plant growing in the hills of Iraq, Turkey and Syria, at altitudes between 300 and 5400 feet (100 to 1650 metres). Cultivation ''Iris persica'' needs warmth and shelter to blossom but can be grown in the open air. It flowers in February and March and may flower for up to six weeks in a row. Iris Fosteriana
''Iris fosteriana'' is a species in the genus ''Iris'', subgenus '' Scorpiris''. It was named after Michael Foster (a known British Iris expert) by Dr Aitchison, and found in Pendjeh, Turkmenistan. First described in transactions of the Linnean Society of London in April 1888 and then published by John Gilbert Baker in Botanical Magazine in 1892. Iris fosteriana is an accepted name by the RHS. It has many similarities with other iris species in the Xiphium. Habit It has a slim bulb (coloured cream) with a long thin neck. Below the bulb are tuberous roots that are white, thin and 6in long. The fragile roots mean that the bulb does not take transplanting very well. In Spring, (March in the UK) it has 1 or 2 long tubed flowers that are 4–5 cm (1.5 or 2in) wide with downward-turned rich purple (or deep purple) standards and creamy yellow (or pale yellow) falls. The flowers do not produce any scent. After flowering, it produces seeds, but there is no aril (coating) ...
