Junius (writer)
Junius was the pen name, pseudonym of a writer who contributed a series of letters to the ''Public Advertiser'', from 21 January 1769 to 21 January 1772. The signature had been already used, apparently by him, in a letter of 21 November 1768. These and numerous other personal letters were not included in his ''1772 Letters of Junius, Letters of Junius'' collection, published in 1772. Choice of "Junius" as a pseudonym The name may have been chosen because the same author had already signed Lucius and Brutus, and wished to exhaust the name of Lucius Junius Brutus, the Roman Republic, Roman patriot who led the overthrow of the Roman monarchy. Alternatively, the name may have been derived from the Roman poet Juvenal, who was thought also to have had the Roman naming conventions, nomen Junius. Junius Henri Browne
Junius Henri Browne (14 October 1833 Seneca Falls, New York - 2 April 1902 New York City) was an American journalist. Biography He was a graduate of Saint Xavier College, Cincinnati. In 1861, he became war correspondent for the ''New York Tribune'', was wounded at Fort Donelson, and taken prisoner while engaged in an abortive expedition to run the Vicksburg batteries. Browne was imprisoned for 20 months in seven different prisons, confined successively at Vicksburg, Jackson, Atlanta, Richmond, and Salisbury, North Carolina, prisons. On December 18, 1864, Browne escaped from Salisbury, along with journalist Albert Deane Richardson. They traveled together 400 miles through hostile country, and reached the Union lines on January 14, 1865. His list of Union soldiers who died at Salisbury, published in the ''Tribune'', is the only authentic account of their fate. Junius Spencer Morgan III (March 15, 1892 – October 19, 1960) was an American banker and a director of the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company. Early life Junius Spencer Morgan III was born on March 15, 1892, to Jane Norton Grew and Jack Morgan (1867–1943), who was a banker and the son of J. Pierpont Morgan (1837–1913), the renowned financier. Through his mother, he was a first cousin to Henry Grew Crosby (1898–1929). He received an A.B. from Harvard University in 1914. Career In 1914, after graduating from Harvard, he joined J.P. Morgan & Co., working there until 1917. On September 15, 1917, he was commissioned an ensign in the United States Navy Reserve Force and was later promoted to lieutenant during the First World War. Junius Spencer Morgan II (June 5, 1867 – August 18, 1932) was a banker, art collector and nephew of John Pierpont Morgan, Sr. Early life Junius Spencer Morgan II was born on June 5, 1867 in Irvington, New York to George Hale Morgan (1840–1911) and Sarah Spencer Morgan (1839–1896), distant cousins. Junius Spencer Morgan I (April 14, 1813 – April 8, 1890) was an American banker and financier, as well as the father of John Pierpont "J.P." Morgan and patriarch to the Morgan banking house. In 1864, he established J. S. Morgan & Co. in London as the successor to George Peabody & Co., of which he was junior partner. With his son's aid, Morgan grew his banking house into a trans-Atlantic financial empire that included firms in London, New York City, Philadelphia, and Paris. Junius Kellogg (March 16, 1927 – September 16, 1998) was an American basketball player, coach, and civil servant. He was the first African-American to play basketball for Manhattan College. While playing for the Jaspers, Kellogg became known for his role in helping to expose the CCNY point-shaving scandal of 1950–51. College career In 1951, Kellogg, a standout 6'8" center, was offered a $1,000 bribe to shave points, before a game against DePaul. Although he was working for minimum wage at a frozen custard shop near campus, he refused to take it, reporting the solicitation to his coach, Ken Norton. Norton sent him to the district attorney, Frank Hogan. To get evidence about the corruption, he wore a wire when he was again approached in a nearby bar. Junius Hillyer (April 23, 1807 – June 21, 1886) was an American lawyer, judge, and politician who served two terms in the United States Congress. Early years and education Junius Hillyer was born in Wilkes County, Georgia, on April 23, 1807, the second son of Shaler and Rebecca (Freeman) Hillyer. His father died when Junius was fourteen, prompting his mother to move the family to Athens, Georgia. Junius attended Franklin College (later the University of Georgia) in Athens, graduating in 1828. He had studied the law during his senior year, and was admitted to the bar, one month after graduation from college. Hillyer began a law practice in Lawrenceville, Georgia, but returned to Athens after one year.
